2015 GMC 1500 Sierra Denali Ecotec Gen5 LT motor 3.5L oil pump

Recommended Posts

I purchased a 2015 Sierra 1500 Denali that had only 60,000 miles on it from a guy. It had a Easy Care Gold Extended Warranty that was purchased when the truck was purchased new. He handed me the file, but I didn't think to breakdown the oil change interval. The truck now has 62,000 miles on it. The oil pump starts making a that whining noise that sounds almost like low power steering fluid or transmission. When I figured out it was coming from the oil pan, I took it to a dealership. They replaced my vacuum pump under GM warranty then looked into the oil pump issue.

The Mechanic told me that after the truck warmed up then he could here the noise and confirmed. Long story short. Because the previous owner didn't change the oil at the proper intervals and keep detailed records that Easy Care would not cover the oil pump. These engine have to have the oil changed every 5,000 miles and only use a quality 0W-20W (Dexos) Mobil1, etc. The book says 7,500 miles oil change. I am sticking with 5,000 miles because of the Ecotec Gen5 LT motor.

I got 2 quotes 1 from Napa Autocare. $1,600 and 1 from a Chevrolet dealership $1,200  I purchased a oil pump from GM in Michigan for $125.46

Sounds similar to a ford 3v engine oil pump. In those, even though Ford says “you have to drop the front axle and pan” to replace it, I promise it can be done just by removing the front cover. I’ve never done an oil pump on these engines, but I’d definitely scour the Internet to see if dropping the pan is actually necessary, not that pulling the front cover is all that fun.

The PO must have really dragged a$$ on oil changes to foil the pump in that mileage; I’ve seen engines sludged to hell with over 200k miles that still had operating pumps. Are your oil pressure numbers out of whack?  Not discounting the diagnosis but i’d Get a 3rd opinion. If the pump is in fact bad at that mileage, I predict it is only the tip of the ice berg. Did you drain the oil and look for glitter?
