Probably shouldn’t have cut the muffler and flapper off

Recommended Posts

Well, paid $80 to get the muffler and flapper cut off on my 19 with the 5.3l..

The drone is pretty bad and it sounds a bit too airy. At idle it sounds great, same with hard acceleration.

On my 14 with the 6.2L, this mod sounded great.

Should I have kept the flapper? I thought I read plenty of people who said save money do a muffler delete. What can I do to help this out?

That’s the problem with all the “sounds great cut it all off yeehaw!!” comments.

Sound is subjective and you really won’t know if you like it until you hear it in person. That being said, I understand leaving the flappers in is a better option to combat AFM noises

So now the question is, install an aftermarket muffler and get a flapper too? Or just muffler? I can’t find any definite answers yet.
But yeah totally different sound than my 14 with the 6.2L. I got asked a few times what kind of exhaust I had. I think that truck had resonators whereas this truck just has cats and then the muffler.

I think it depends with what model of exhaust you have, my truck is a z71 model and I cut off the flapper and muffler and just put a straight pipe in. But because the z71 is a dual outlet it has 6 mesh resonators instead of just 3 like the passenger side exit exhausts.

My truck has very very very little drone if none at all. Maybe since I run 33's it might be a lower RPM but I doubt it makes a difference.

I did originally do a stright pipe but the initial start up was pretty loud. So I went to a borla pro XS instead. Really nice muffler. Quiet when you want it to be, loud when you want it to be, but I went back to the stright pipe because it was too quiet for my taste. But then again it could be louder on a single passenger side dump.
