Add Z71 package

Recommended Posts

Wow. All this is great. And y'all are making me feel better about not having Z71. I most definitely don't need it. I just see them around town and want it lol. I looked at my RPO codes and I have G80. Which is cool because I think, out of all of the impossible/difficult add-ons, that is the one I wanted most. I will likely just add skid plates, maybe dual exhaust, and maybe upgrade my shocks. But, it rides smooth right now and I don't know if it is necessary.

I just need to forget about the badging too. Ashamed to admit that it is something I want! But I mos def will not just put it on just to put it on. Haha.

Also, what exactly is the 2 speed xfer case?

The 2 speed case has an actual low range to it.  The regular 4x4 have a single speed case so no low range.  Instead it has a "terrain mode" that will mimic a low range.  See owners manual info below.

Quote

Terrain Mode

Use for finer control during low speed, off-road driving. When using this mode it will mimic the characteristics of four-wheel-drive low without the torque capabilities.

Use when:

Traveling on very rough roads at very low speeds, such as a two-track or heavily rutted road.

Traveling slowly in grassy fields.

Pulling a boat out of the water on a trailer.

Using the vehicle for public off-road recreational driving. See Off-Road Driving and Hill and Mountain Roads.

When in Terrain Mode, the vehicle will shift automatically but may hold a lower gear longer to maximize engine torque. The steering will change to provide more precise control. A unique pedal map, transmission shift pattern, and ram control are utilized to give better control at lower speeds and over rough terrain. When the vehicle comes to a stop, Vehicle Hold is engaged. TCS will be optimized for maximum torque transfer across axles, and Active Braking During Lift Throttle will be engaged.

Nothing to be ashamed of at all, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

I think you mentioned you have RST which would be color matching bumpers... If you go with dual exhaust, you may look into getting the tips powder coated to blend in with your bumpers better vs. the chrome. Unless you like the chrome tips

That's the other thing, you mentioned maybe upgrade your shocks but that it rides smooth right now. You could "upgrade" to "better" shocks but if they're not how you want them then it's probably not worth it! If I were you I'd likely stick with what you have now and take some time over the next X number of months to see if that changes, or ride in a Z71/go test drive one, maybe you have friends or co-workers that have something different than you.

Everything nowdays is built around jumping into "what's better" or what everyone else is doing and we lose sight of how exactly we want it!  I think you're heading in the right direction - post pics!

For what it’s worth, if it makes you feel even better...the 19 Z71 I drove was one of the worst riding modern trucks I’ve been in. Wallowy, bouncy and just not very comfortable or planted. There was a few reports here of people literally being bounced off the road. I think that was a little exaggerated but good for a laugh I guess.

I know they have made improvements to all of the suspensions for 2020, but I would still chose the base or NHT suspensions instead. Partial to the NHT for the sporty feel.

I was in a similar situation in my 2015 1500. Just upgrade your shocks and struts and skid plates. I prefer that option so you can get exactly what you want. Plenty of good options for that. If you’re feeling cute you can get the AT4 2” lift kit from GM that doesn’t affect your warranty. Not a huge fan of the ride, but you can always change those shocks and struts down the road. I think you get a fancy performance badge that adds like 10 hp or something too....
