Best Way to Run Exhaust!?

Recommended Posts

Try'n to decide how to run the exhaust on my 02 ECSB with the 5.3L. The stock configuration consists of 2 separate cats with outlet pipes (guessing 2.5") that Y together to form a 3" single pipe that enters the stock muffler and then continues out at 3" to the side of the truck.

If I understand correctly, I have the option of running "true" duals since I have 2 separate cats. Also, I have an option of running a dual in/dual out muffler. Or if I want to keep as close to stock as possible then I could run a single in/single out (or single in/dual out) muffler.

If I run the true duals, I understand I should run an H or X pipe to balance out the bank levels. What I don't know if there are any distinct advantages over an H or X pipe. One of the guys at Flowmaster told me the X pipe was more for racing configurations, but didn't have the technical expertise to actually tell me what that meant. So I don't know if was just BS'n or what. :D

What I'm looking for is a deep and throaty 60's muscle car sound. The sound that makes people pee their pants cause it sounds so mean! To help achieve this, I thought about dumping the pipes after they leave the muffler(s). My preference would be to take them out the back in a dual configuration.

My fears are loss on the low end side. I rarely tow, but still would like to stay even there and gain on the higher end and also increase the MPG. Also, I would like to avoid as much as the cackle/pop/whatever you want to call it noise like the cherry bombs are infamous for producing.

I know what I'd like to achieve, but don't know how to get that point and which products to use. Any advice you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Appreciate the info thus far. That in mind, if I decide to run the true duals, I will definitely pony up the extra $$ and get me an X pipe. Might as well do it right if I'm gonna do it. :D

Still no comments on which system would provide the best performance and sound. Keeping my fingers crossed someone can chime in with an answer and some experience.

Again, appreciate all the good info and advice. This forum is great. Cheers to all that participate.

To achieve the sound that you want, I would run an x-pipe into two 40 or 50 series Flowmasters (delta 50s would be quietest, but still loud), and then run your duals out the back. This would definitely be loud...and I think the resoance would kill you.

If you want the sound and not the resonance, I would use a single in/dual out Flowmaster 50 series Big Block, and run your duals out the back. The single in with the single muffler should keep some backpressure and help with torque, while keeping the resonance tolerable.

Well after kicking this decision around for wwwaaayyyy too long, I have finally made my mind up. Since I'm looking for the deep aggressive sound, and don't mind a little cab resonance I'm gonna go with the Flow 40's. Plus they are ultra cheap in comparison to the other choices I see around.

In regards to how I'm going to run the pipes, I opted to do a single 3" in and dual 2.25" out vs. the "true duals" with the X pipe. Reason being is that just replacing the muffler and tailpipes won't affect my warranty like running the true duals would. Also, it is my understanding that running the smaller 2.25" pipe will help me retain my lowend (as confirmed by GreyGhost via PM who runs the same exhaust - thanks man!).

As far as dumping vs. running to the rear, I opted for the latter with 3.5" x 18" echo chambers. Again, based on a PM with GreyGhost, I was able to confirm this setup sounds a little more deep and aggressive vs. the true dual system dumped (his friend had the true duals to compare side x side).

I thank all that have chimed in on this topic as I realize I have been a nuisance with exhaust recently. Thanks for your patience. Once I get the actual system installed, I will post back with a final opinion & sound clip (if I can figure out a good way to make one).

Again, many thanks!!

:sigh::wtf::wtf::wtf:

Check that post. Note that there are many other options out there than who spends loads of money on marketing and advertising. I have had my Goerlich system on my 02 ECSB for a week now, and I have to tell you, LOVE IT.

I was aprehensive to get it as I had not done any research on, nor heard of the Goerlich products at all. However, this is exactly what I wanted. Low end torque improvement, deep rumble at take off (slow takeoff) rips it up at WOT and barely any interior resonance at cruising speeds, much less than the Gibsons I am used to, and nothing even noticeable. My MPG has possibly gone up slightly as well.

The muffler is built like a glass pack, straight through, and I had it dual in dual out, one out each side behind the tires, not rear exit.

Look at all your options, this was a great purchase for me...I think with the tips it was $350 out the door.
