GMC Sierra CPO saga

I did as thorough of an inspection as I could during torrential downpours. Even the keenest of eyes can't see past rust on rotors and water on tires.

Never buy a used car in the rain.  Or in a snowstorm.  Or if the engine is already warm when you get there, if they knew you were coming.  Take the vehicle for 24 hrs, take it somewhere else, pay them to put it on a lift and take a wheel or two off to check brakes, suspension, etc.  Drive it at different highway speeds, not just a couple of blocks in town.  If the selling dealership won't let you do that, run in the opposite direction.

That way, you can do your own "CPO" checklist and run through it with the selling dealership to have them fix anything wrong or negotiate a lower price because you will have to fix it.

Hell, with these trucks, make sure to hit at least 80 on the highway to make sure it doesn't have Chevy shake!

I have always found this method to work, really lets you see how the vehicle reacts in normal driving conditions:

CPO is just another meaningless title car dealerships use to sell vehicles from my experience.  I would have checked the vehicle more thoroughly before buying it.  Not sure if there are any laws in your state on contracts but I always make any dealer I purchase from include the 3 day return for a full refund in any contract I sign.  Most in IL do already but it definitely gives you a little peace of mind in regardless.

 Rotors are grooved and warped

Tires are starting to dry rot,

I had a 2015 Denali that I bought new.

Last year at about 40k miles, my rotors looked worse than yours on the back sides, looked fine on the side you could see. Checked the back brakes and they were the same, which again is real weird. Obviously warranty didn't cover it. The weird part was the brakes felt great until I first noticed it -and the way they looked, it seemed like I should have felt something.

Maybe they seemed OK, but the vehicle sat for some time before you bought it and they rusted more from non use? But like you said, they should have inspected them and would have seen the grooves -you know that they wouldn't have passed them for a state inspection.

I had the Bridgestone tires on it and at about 20k miles I was washing it and noticed  dry rot like yours -looked and all four wee the same. the tire warranty is what applies. I called Bridgestone and they had covered attire dry rot, but prorated, which was fine. They mounted and balance (4) new 22" tires for approximately $500.00. So, I'd call the tire manufacturer if the dealer won't do anything to make it right.

All really good points. I have a case open with GM and I'm still deciding whether I'm going to act on it or not. I know if I do the repairs it will be done right and of high quality. I also know that techs getting paid warranty time are not always thrilled and rush through the job.

I plan on contacting the tire manufacturer tomorrow... This is something that didn't occur to me right away and is worth a shot.

Some if your are correct in saying I didn't inspect the vehicle thoroughly enough. Given the circumstances with COVID-19, pouring rain, an unhappy wife and a 3.5 hour drive...I did the best I could with the cards I was dealt. Ideal? No! But what things in life are?

My beef is obviously with items that should have been checked, said they were checked and clearly were not. We shall see what happens.

Looks like the dealership will be reimbursing me the cost of front rotors and pads. I spoke to the GM and provided evidence and a quote on parts and they agreed to full reimbursement.

It appears I'll be on my own with tires. Dealer doesn't see a problem and Goodyear won't touch it since I'm the second owner and tires are "used".  Can't win them all!

@VetteDreamin3   In my opinion, I think you're OK on the tire thing. Below is a pic of my Goodyear's tread & I see the same thing as what you showed. These tires are OEM & are 3 years old. The small cracking that you see is at the base of the tread & I feel is pretty normal for the area that doesn't hit the road. Where I would get more concerned would if you see it on the side walls. You should look at the side wall very closely. Your call to replace. As I mentioned above, I thought they'd cover if you talked to the right people. I know what other's have posted about CPO's BUT remember, this is a Bumper tp Bumper warranty from General Motors, not the dealer. If your issues fall within their specifications, it should be covered by the warranty. If the dealership baulks, escalate it up the chain of command. Glad to hear they'll covered your issues on the brakes. In my case, they even offered a loaner car. Guess it depends on each individual at the dealerships. Some can be ...difficult. Glad you posted the follow-up.

I didn't realize that GM had a CPO program. I have purchased my wife's last two Infinity models through their CPO program and have been satisfied (as of this date). I bought the latest one like you. Saw it online and drove 5 hrs. in the rain to pick it up. After driving it, I asked that it be brought inside and placed on the rack so I could inspect the underside and the Dealer obliged. One of the techs loaned me his flashlight so I wouldn't have to go back out to my truck. While this turned out to be a pleasant buying experience, I'll not drive 5 hrs for warranty repairs or service. Point is, Dealers are either good or bad and you take your chances. Infinity's CPO program appears to be what they advertise. Seems GM's isn't as bad as some make out.

Good luck.

One victory is better than zero.

Since the dealer has been called out, maybe check to see if they will make you a deal on a set of take offs.

In all honesty and without trying to come off as a smarty pants, its somewhat a live and learn deal.

You say you are an ASE master tech right?  Is your time as a tech in the dealership world or independent shops?  If you had any dealer time, it would potentially be really clear as to what happened here.  The used car manager CPOs pretty much everything on the lot without spending a dime other than the fees to CPO it.  Tech very well might have wrote it for needing pads and rotors and tires, and the dollup team probably saw the body fixing but the used car manager said "brakes are 7mm?  Not gonna do it" and then "why does it need tires?  They have great tread!"  I've been at a Chevrolet dealer for over 10 years now (3 years in the shop, 7 in parts).  Luckily our used car manager gives two $hits and will put brakes and tires, fix most things, etc.  If they can't be certified, he won't do it.

Its the unfortunate roll of the dice in dealership used cars.  Even the CPO ones.

At least you got something out of them for the brakes, but they should at least split $$$ for a set of tires too.

agreed, minor cracking like that in the tread grooves is fine, get nervous when it starts on the sidewalls.

when i was shopping for lightly used trucks i had one dealer voluntarily put it on the rack and sent me about a dozen pictures as he knew i would of been coming from 4 hours away and said thats just the way we do things around here. I did specifically ask how rusted the underside was first. He said if you decide to come we can put it back on the rack for you to inspect yourself if you wish.

Castle Chevrolet in chicagoland i asked several questions about a particular truck and to verify off the window sticker what it had on it as i told him ive been burned before between online listing says vs window sticker. He said fully understandable and went out and sent me a pic of the sticker. I ended up finding one locally so i sent an email back to castle saying thank you for your time and they said well since you did buy a chevy product and your ever in the area heres a coupon for a free oil change on your truck! thought that was cool of them. There are good dealers and absolute shitfests i could write a book about.
