2016 to 2017 Silverado trans swap

Recommended Posts

Good morning fellas,

This is a follow-up to my previous post about the six speed torque converter failure. As I stated before with everything going on I can’t afford to drop $4300 for a rebuild right now I have had it diagnosed definitely torque converter failure parts came through the transmission from the torque converter needs a full rebuild and the cheapest I can find is 4300 local. So I have found a good transmission out of a 2017 Silverado. From what I can see is the same transmission, truck had caught on fire. The story is his girlfriend set a truck on fire, burned the interior completely and some of the body but did not affect the engine or transmission. The asking price on the transmission is 750 bucks or best offer and looks to be in excellent shape. My question is what do I need to do if I purchase this transmission to put it in my truck? From the research I have found it will bolt right in, everything is exactly the same. But I have heard that it will need to be reprogrammed or programmed to the truck something to that effect? If this is the case how do I find out how to do that how do I go about that or who do I call? Thank you

17 in a 16 should be fine, but there will be programming that will need to be done.

Your truck only recognizes the transmission that it came with from the factory, so they would have to perform a "relearn" so it would work with the new one.

Yep. If you install the transmission yourself, do the work and then tow the truck to the dealership for programming.

They will re-program the TCM with the same calibration that would have come with your VIN from the factory.

From looking online it looks like the transmissions are 14-16 and then 17 on up?

Update: if I go online at a few different sites and go to purchase a trans for a 14-16 the part number is the same but when I change the year to a 17 it changes, as well as the price too. A remand for the 16 is more than $1000 more expensive than the 17??? Go figure. I guess this might be a question for Chevy? Unless any of you fellas have some info or experience with this. Thank you

I know for sure there is a difference with the 8 speeds. The 8 speeds got new TCM's for 2017+.

The 6 speeds I believe use the same T43 TCM that they is always have.

I hope so, $750 at this point is a lot easier to swallow than $4300...... wife is a GM for Graduate hotels and got laid off due to all this covid. I’d probably just rebuild the 16 later and swap it when needed.

Found this part number on GMPartsdirect.com, Automatic Transmission Assembly - GM (24279589)

It says that it will fit a 17.

What trim level is your truck? Engine?
