Overhead Console

Recommended Posts

My truck didn't come with the factory overhead center console. Does any one know if the wires are there under the head liner to make the map lights work, or is this something l'll have to purchase separately, so that when I install the OHC I'll have map lights?

Mine did not come prewired for the overhead console. I easily made my own wiring harness that works as good as the factory one would. Also you may not have all the mounting brackets in your roof like I did, so I came up with some fancy way to mount it up there. By looking at it you would never know that its not factory. Here are a few pics of the install..

This pics is after I dropped the headliner.. As you can see there is no rear mounting bracket. The red wires are for my cab lights

This shows the fnished product. I ended up mounting the back end of the console to the headliner itself. There is a tab that sticks up through the headliner and I just drilled a small hole and poked a small cotter pin through it. Worked pretty good.

Another one of the finished product

Hope this helps

Thanks for the pics SportyShorty! How hard was the head liner to get to drop? Does the trim on the a & b pillars just pop loose, or is there a secret. Have you had any problems with the head liner sagging with the extra weight? My wife's dad's Sierra ('99 or '00 not sure) has the console from the factory, and there is a bracket that is just below the cab roof, that the console attaches to.

You sure did your home work there, that install looks first rate. If my truck doesn't have the bracket I may try the cotter pin route. Once again, thanks for the info.

Yup, just pop the A pillar covers off, unscrew your sun visors, pop the clips on the oh s**t handles, and it should pretty much fall down. The headliner is not sagging at all, like you said, the install came out great. Most people think that it was from the factory. As far a the wiring harness, just your basic hot and ground wires. Its pretty straight forward. Only thing is, is that you have to cut off the factory plug on the console in order to splice the wires.

2001HD-

I got mine from G&R Auto Parts at 9121 Shields Blvd. in Oklahoma City. You can call them at (405) 634-0575. Ext 104 is for Greg Greene. He is the guy I talked to. He can give you a price on these consoles. When I talked to him a couple of weeks ago, he still had several left. He sells these as "used" but they are really brand new GM. What he tells me is that these are bought from a GM assembly plant, after a model year change over, and he can't sell them as new, even though they haven't been installed in anything. I won't tell you what I gave for mine, but I can promise you it won't be any thing close to the dealer price of $90.00+ Give him a call! :D

Quick question for you. I am wanting to do the same thing. You mentioned your fix for the posts in the back, how does it attach in the front? Is there a screw or something and is there a place to screw to already in the roof? Thanks.

When I bought mine, the front of the console came with a metal clip already screwed onto the console. This clip just presses into a rectangular hole already in the cab's upper roof structure. But mine has to be modified to be supported in the rear like Sporty Shorty done his.

I had my headliner down a few weeks ago and there was a harness with two wire

right there in the center where the console would go.

Mine is the work truck model without the snow plow package. I wondered if that was for the marker lights or the center console.

OK. I have a stupid question. I have one of these in my hand and getting ready to do this to mine soon and I am wondering, do you have to cut out the headliner for the back of the maplights to fit or do you just sqush em up against the headliner? Thanks.
