Should I change my 33.1" spare tire to match my new 33.9" tires?

Recommended Posts

I am getting ready to install 295/60/20 Toyo Open Country AT3's (new) on my '20 AT4.  I am currently stock and plan to run these 33.9" x 11.8" tires without any modification at this time.  I have read other threads where forum members are running this size in the Ridge Grappler on a stock AT4 without any rubbing at all, so I should be fine.  However, upon researching my spare tire today, I found that I have a 255/80/17 spare tire size which is a 33.1".  So, since my new tires are 33.9" in circumference, should I change my spare to a 255/85/17 which is a 34.1"?  Granted, this is assuming the spare tire location will fit this size.  Upon inspection, there is some play around the spare...probably an inch or a little more.  Or, should I leave my spare alone?  In the chance that I need to install my factory size spare, will it be fine for short distance driving until I can reach a service center/tire store?  Obviously I don't want to compromise my differential or do internal damage.

Thanks for any help/advice you can provide.
