Hood latch recall

Recommended Posts

I find it odd that only 2,004 trucks are affected by this recall. They should already know which range of VIN numbers are affected, but it won't be another month before they start the recall. Replacing the whole hood, hood latch, and striker wire is going to be pricey. The hood latch is plastic right? Or just the lever is plastic? I'd have to look at mine again. Seems just replacing the striker wire/hoop would be enough. Some guys that ceramic coated their hoods are going to be ticked LOL

I just looked at mine thinking that the striker was just bolted to the hood and could be replaced without replacing the complete hood.  Turns out it's integral with the hood and a complete hood would be required.  I hope mine's not in the recall, I hate to think about the local dealer doing this job.  The truck is perfect and I'd like for it stat that way.

Not to mention paint matching...

Saw somewhere else that there was a heat treat issue with a batch or 2 of striker wires from an 'alternate' supplier.

This recall is the same thing ....supplier defect

Holy flirkin' snit! What a cheap ass method of construction. An aluminum hood so they use a steel backing plate and swedge the steel striker wire though the hood into the backing plate. So now you have a throwaway hood and the fix is to replace the hood and you'll have a new truck with a repainted hood, no more baked on finish like the rest of the truck but a quickie acrylic spray job......color and finish might even match for a few years.

One would think they might have enough brains to come up with a cheaper for them and less traumatic for owners fix. Money spent on replacement hoods could be applied to supplying portable non destructive penetrometers (like those used for testing steel harness for heat treating of steel surgical instruments) could be used on the wire latch so only those lacking proper heat treatment could be identified and subject to replacement.

And it could go beyond just the hood with blending into the fenders to insure a good paint match. All of which requires removing all trim, headlamps etc so there are no masking lines.

Has anyone had this recall performed on their truck yet? I got a letter saying my truck is part of this recall, but I wasn't driving it much while I was working from home recently and have been putting it off.

For those that haven't checked, the hood and tailgate on HD's are steel.  I haven't found any aluminum panels on my truck, so the one poster above is wrong about having an aluminum hood.  1500's do have aluminum hoods and tailgates - doors too I think.
