Transmission Learning

Recommended Posts

I have heard people mention that the transmission has to learn. Is that a thing or is it BS? Just curious as I just had ECM, shift module, and a few other things done to my truck. I’m curious what it “learns”. What happens if I drive in sport mode full time - does that affect anything it learns.

'20 Sierra owners manual:

The transmission uses adaptive shift controls.

The adaptive shift control process continually compares key shift parameters to pre-programmed ideal shifts stored in the transmission’s computer.

The transmission constantly makes adjustments to improve vehicle performance according to how the vehicle is being used, such as with a heavy load or when the temperature changes.

During this adaptive shift control process, shifting might feel different as the transmission determines the best settings.

FOREVER

It is most noticeable early on but it continues always. People aggravate the process by focusing on some aspect that bothers them then like a scab they pick at it and wonder why it doesn't heal. Guys complain that on a certain hill at a certain speed the transmission does this or that and then they go out of their way to drive that place under the exact conditions that aggravate it instead of 2 mph higher or lower. :wtf:

Patient says, "Doc, it hurts when I do this...". Doc says, "Don't do that!"

Why is it so hard to do things that mitigate the act? Ignore it. Let it do it's job.

My 92, Camry, Genesis and 02 Chevy under light acceleration have a little bump after 2nd gear. I know with every 700r4 I’ve owned it was converted lock up. The others I don’t know. Unless they slip I don’t get too excited about the little things they may do. I drive so many different ways depending on mood. If their supposed to learn me, good luck with that. I’m still learning me, I’m 64.
