Coronavirus

It is one of those situations where some won't realize the severity until it hits closer to home.  The longer it takes people to get with the program, the longer it will play havoc on our economy and daily lives.  It is selfish to deny the severity of this crisis and not comply and  with current precautions and procedures from our respective health authorities.  You may be the healthy individual able to withstand any of the symptoms but this doesn't prevent you from being a mule for the virus.  I suspect all of us have loved ones not as healthy as ourselves. If you don't really care about infecting others then do it for yourself.  You don't want the medical system tied up with pandemic issues should you ever need emergency help.  The hoarding is a calamity, imo.  It does serve to illustrate that people are taking this threat seriously but flies in the face of social distancing!  I am seeing more respectful behavior than selfish behavior during these hard times and am doing what I can to avoid the virus.  I am a senior and so are all of my friends. Strive to be part of the solution, not the problem is my current  mantra.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by “realize the severity”?

How is this different than other infectious diseases, other than possessing the most mildest of symptoms even below that of the flu?

COVID19 is no worse for the high risk individuals than the flu or pneumonia and the recommended preventative measures are things we’ve all heard before & should actively be practicing on a daily basis.

Also, when you say, “The longer it takes people to get with the program, the longer it will play havoc on our economy and daily lives.” this is exactly what the CDC & Gov are trying to do, prolong it. Have you seen the curve?

. Quarantine the venerable {vulnerable} like you should every year.

I am fortunate to be in good health and wouldn't want to quarantine myself on an annual basis because of my birth certificate.

You’re also making an invalid comparison on mortality rates. All “known” cases of COVID19 are being well documented. You’re using that figure as an absolute. BUT, reports are that there could be thousands (10s-100s) of undocumented cases. The symptoms are so mild to the average healthy person that they may not even realize they have/had it & discount it as just a cold/flu.
Likewise, most often, flu cases are simply not documented because people self diagnose and it doesn’t get reported. They just deal with it. That is why you see sloppy stats like “9-45 million” cases and “12,000-61,000” deaths from the CDC.

At the end of the day, the COVID19 symptoms are mild and non life threatening to most heathy people and they just recover at home. Certainly, this is a serious problem for individuals with compromised immune systems & respiratory problems. No one is denying that. The common flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, etc are also very serious to the same group.

Ryan,

You are correct. I should have said of the "documented cases" the mortality rates are 0.1% for the flu and 3.4% for coronavirus.  Keep in mind the documented worldwide cases are today 162,577 infected and 6069 deaths (3.7% mortality).  On Feb, 15th these numbers were 69197 and 1669 (2.4% mortality).  As you suggest there are lots of people with mild cases, but many not yet tested will have severe cases too.  Older persons are more at risk, but there are young among the deaths as well.  The issue is the virus is so contagious and so relatively deadly that way too many people are going to be seriously ill in a short time period and need care from completely overwhelmed hospitals. This is why so much discussion today from the CDC is about flattening the curve.  Steps to flatten the curve are what states and the Feds are doing now, shutting down places with a higher likelihood of transmission.  Exactly what I am doing by avoiding the same. Regardless, I appreciated your comments.

I appreciate the array of information out there to dismiss or minimize the significance of this outbreak. I had dinner with a man last night who just got off the phone with his quarantined daughter in Spain.  It is serious and we just need to look at countries that got a head start.

Remember some of those other countries have older populations. Worst eating habits and live closer together. I read on a liberal website (I read them all) that the next industry to be affected is trucking. What was that design to do? Panic! Where on other there’s recovery stories. Next there will be rationing. I haven’t seen a store shut down yet. Even our most conservative people are pushing socialist ideas. The mayor of NY talk about nationalizing some factories. We are living in dangerous times. More than this bug could ever do. Next week will tell the tale. The most dangerous thing that could happen to our seniors is losing their nest egg do to the stock market crashing. I would be panicking if I didn’t have rents houses as well as an Ira. I’m more worried about it than my health.

The very same people that were in charge during the H1-N1. The speaker, senator minority leader, the media. Are telling you this is a crisis like no other this time. The only difference the president. The media is forcing this. Including Joe Biden.

My wife has Cystic Fibrosis and I can tell you first hand that they are treating this very differently than the flu or pneumonia.  It is much more serious for the elderly and those with specific pre-exiting conditions.  We have constant contact with her nurses and doctors regarding her condition and where the current cases are in relation to us.

The H1-N1 in killed about 12K in 2009, mostly the young. Why you ask? It’s been around since 1909. Older people had it in one form or another. About 200K people get every year we develop immunity to it there’s no cure. They’ve been trying since then. The lack of response by Obama probably did us a favor. All this is doing with every one in isolation is insuring it will be back in full force next year. Along with an evolved version like the flu every year.

The point of statistics is acquiring a high probability without a total population count. I'd say they have enough data to have an accurate estimate that has a very high probability.

The silver lining here is maybe from now forward more people will stay home when they get sick, wash their hands more often, and get vaccines. I hate going out somewhere and hearing some dipshit hacking and sneezing all over the place without any concern for others. Cv19 and flu infects around 2 per 1 infected; measles infects 19 per 1 infected yet the idiot anti-vaccine crowd has been pushing for their "right" not to vaccinate and put us all at risk...

As I’ve gotten older. I’ve lesson the hand shaking and carry sanitizer for when I use gas pumps etc. Especially during flu season. I eat at place that brings food out on hot plates. I check online for ratings before I choose a new one. Being retired I go off peek to places that have crowds usually. I travel that way too. Most older people I know do this. We live in the same world as the workers. We don’t have to be on the road at 8 or eat in a restaurant at 12. Same world different times different experience. I will not be at grocery store for awhile.
