How much do you need to tow, what is the weights you are going to be hauling?

You can look up the specs of the current truck to see if they are within it's towing limits.

For what it's worth, yes you could swap a 5.3 or 6.2 into the truck because these trucks did come equipped like that. The problem you are going to run into is the differences in wiring harness and body harness stuff that is going to be different from a 4.3 truck to a 5.3/6.2 truck. If you had a complete wrecked donor, that would make it easier but for the most part it will be a hassle and consume a ton of your time to do this.

I think Cameron summed it up well...

Are you doing the work yourself but looking for step by step instructions?

You got a free truck so you may consider selling it and looking for a 5.3 or 6.2 of same value if it suits your need.

What is a good amount of work...several people have told me that...just never specify what it takes

Welcome to this forum - lot's of good stuff here!  The amount our trucks will be able to carry varies by a couple hundred pounds and in some cases the lighter engine allows for a greater payload.  Your towing ability is posted inside your owners' manual.   I pulled a dual axle travel trailer for a couple of years with my '15 4.3.  My truck is rated to pull 7k lbs and the trailer's max load was 7k lbs.   No problem.    A bigger engine won't increase the rated towing capacity of your truck.  The added weight will actually take away from your available payload.  If you need to haul heavier loads than your truck is rated to carry/pull then negotiate on a replacement truck.  Swapping engines will be a waste of money for the reason you are considering.  If you are simply out to hot rod an old, tired truck, and have the skills then enjoy the challenge!
