Thinking of trading my 15 on a 20....

Recommended Posts

Beat way I found on trade Is to get the kbb value the black book value and then go to carmax and see what they will offer you I find new dealers around here are usually under what carmax offers but will end up matching it. I’ve never gotten kbb value for a trade but have gotten close to it.

Something to realize too is trade in affects sales tax so sometimes it’s worth taking a little less up front and when trading in you come out ahead than selling outright. I was offered 24k for mine via CarMax and dealer offered 22,500 and the tax savings put it right up there with the CarMax offer if I had sold it outright.

That being said, this 2019 is the worst truck I have ever owned and would gladly go back to my 2014 in a heartbeat if it was possible.

Being down south, never off roading and wanting to save some money you could save 4 grand by going with a 2wd...

Trucks are certainly holding their value well and you can usually find a good balance of trade in value and lower prices on new if timed right.

I guess you are happy with that deal. Here you walk away you'll never hear from them again. It's all in what part of the country your from. I see these great deals and try and get close to the same, it's just not going to happen here. I guess I'm happy someone is getting a good deal best I could do was $6000 in cash back and 10 free Mobil 1 oil changes I'll get buy with that.

It also matters where the starting point is when negotiating. The truck I most recently bought had a $77K MSRP so $8k is a about 10% off sticker. $6k might be better by percentage off if your truck was under $60k? Those oil changes aren’t cheap. That’s a good value.

I would keep it also, or at least try to sell it privately for a few more bucks. The '15's are the last easily tunable trucks from GM, so you should be able to get premium dollar for yours being a 6.2L

The more computerized they become, the less reliable they are. Not to mention a $10k hike in MSRP for basically the same truck you have now.

Above quote best of the first 18 replies.

I looked at a 2020 almost the spitting image of the 2015 I have. I saw nothing there that convinced me that what I was getting was better than I have. In fact I found it to be 'less' in many ways. Seats for example. Lord those are awful seats. The underlined above. That's a deal breaker right there. Lack of a dipstick for the transmission. :wtf: More road noise. Some features of my 15 were missing like cruise control??? Over all cheaper feel, fit and finish. And no, I did not find the new chassis to ride better. I absolutely do not like the increase in frontal area and ride height. Thing is as big as a 15 3500. Worse fuel economy.

:banghead:

There was not a single feature on that 2020 that was better by any measure that matters to me than my 15 sitting here with 110,000 miles on it. Can't think of a rational reason to just hand someone $15/$20 K 'boot' to get less than I have. Oh and pay 5K more?

 :idiot:

Their greed is not my need.

:seeya:

IF GM wants to sell me another NEW truck then stupidity and greed has to come off the table.

Opinions vary.

I use to trade every two years. There’re were many time I regretted doing that. Use to buy deals because I traded so often. Sometimes I would get a package like Texas stagecoach at the end of a model year. You may want to consider wrapping your current ride and changing the wheels. You change the audio and put new interior in if you desire. Think of the money you’d save. Being retired I’m lucky enough to find low mileage clean trucks of the past. I wouldn’t trade my customized 92 Chevy or my 02 Avalanche for anything new. Cylinder deactivation, stop start, the nannies, etc don’t want or need them.

Looking for some feedback on those who have done similar.

I have a 2015 Crew Cab Z71 LTZ 6.2 8 speed.   In general I really like the truck and it has been good to me.  Currently it sits at 50k miles, it needs tires, a new AC condensor, the mylink touch screen acts up from time to time and I think the Rancho shocks are about done. Trade in value on KBB and NADA is about 30k, which would put me at about 240/mo payment as the 15 is 100% paid off.

It sounds like you have a very nice truck but the lure of a new one is hard to beat. Giving up my '15 and the security of no loan would require a need.  I can't come up with a reason for a new truck other than the excitement of a new toy.   (Karnut is correct in suggesting that this can be achieved through doing something special to your current truck.)   I would be a hypocrite to dismiss your desire for a new truck.  I always have one in my crosshairs should my needs or situation change.  A few months ago I ran into a gentleman about my age driving a '86 F150 Super Cab.  I was interested because one of my favourite trucks was my '85 F150 Super Cab.  Both this gentleman and I purchased these trucks in the year they were built.  The difference was, he still owned his and I've had a dozen new trucks since then.   The first comment I made to my wife was, "Think of all the money we'd have saved if I stuck with the '85."   We both agreed that the enjoyment and experience that I received was of greater value than the money saved.

I spend 9 months out of the year on slippery boat ramps, have seen some people get into some ugly situations, so I always want 4x4 just in case.

Overall you guys are right there really is no major reason for a new truck.....

I am also pricing out new tires, shocks/struts and trying to figure out how to get my touch screen back to 100%.

but for $200-$240 a month having a new fully warrantied truck is tempting....but so is saving a little longer for a new vette or ZL1  :)

I was in same situation as you in January. I decided to pull the trigger and traded in my '16 GMC Sierra Denali 6.2 on a '20 GMC Sierra Denali 6.2. I am glad I did, I really like the '20 vs. the '16, much smoother.  Look for incentives to sweeten the deal.

Good luck with those trade in numbers from NADA or KBB. I just tried to trade my 2017 Chevy Silverado Z71 black edition that booked at $27000 trade in. Mine was in near mint condition even dealer said so. The best I could get from 3 different dealers was $21700, I ended up selling it out right for $30500. Now I sit and wait with no truck waiting for a truck I ordered might get it in April I hope.

yeah I bought my RST for 35.8k, cant imagine 30k for 2015.....although reason I didn't buy used is because prices were so high

I do typically wait.....last new truck I bought b4 my 2019 was in 2005 and while it wasn't dead it was or is I should say pretty hammered....15 yrs on  work truck doing construction every day well just say it runs fine but not in great shape....got money out of it though and she still goin....mine too was kinda of a rush but should have got a 2500....want to get rid of my 19 already but never sold a truck or changed vehicles that quickly and am sure ill take a hit, not owning it outright and all
