225k 2014 roll the dice or pass?

Recommended Posts

Greetings all, long time lurker first time poster. Cutting to the chase, I have an opportunity to check out a 2014 double cab z71 silverado this weekend for sale (dealer). Biggest issue is the miles 225k. Other issues are a full on front end crash 2 years ago (fully repaired) and smashed tailgate (currently). Truck appears well maintained and in great shape other wise. Dealer asking 11k. Any sound advice on if a roll of the dice at 8.5-9k is worth it? Am i better off starting at a lower offer or avoiding it all together? Im guessing trade in would have been in the 6,300 to 7,200 range?? Thanks for the input in advance and thanks for a great source for info of every kind on this forum.

Is this a GM dealership?  What type of warranty are they offering?  I'd consider a high mileage truck if it was in good shape and the price was right. ( I'd still get an independent , objective mechanical inspection.)   I am curious what a scrapyard would pay for an intact '14 Silverado.  Maybe find out and offer a couple of dollars more!  This way, the dealer makes something and you will have an idea as to what to expect at resale time. ?

In that condition they would bid no more then $2500.

Op its not worth it unless you want a fixer. That ENTIRE drive train is waiting to fail.

I'm fortunate to not have to consider a high mileage vehicle as an option.  There was a time when I did.  Reduce your chances of catastrophic failure by having a thorough inspection.  This being said, if Op is considering this vehicle because it is the most he can afford, then I suggest finding a vehicle type that is cheaper to repair..   My 300k  K-Car purchase gave me 100K more for the cost of a fuel pump!

That's a hard pass. They are throw away trucks at that point. 3-5 grand would be a good buy and you might get a year or so out of it before something very expensive breaks making it unfeasible to repair.

Save up 15-20k and buy something that will last you 4-5 years without being a money pit. Sucks to have broken vehicles all the time.

This about sums it up based on the information you've provided, Op!  Let us know what you decide!

Yes sorry, double post, realized it was originally in the HD forum. Is at a legit dealership (non gm). Service records show religious upkeep on oil throughout life of vehicle. Agreed the driveline has taken its lifetime of rotations in only 6 years. Purpose of purchase is really as a second vehicle, ( work truck/weekend material runs). Great point on any catastrophic failure in driveline instantly makes this a money pit because of very little resale/trade in value. Interested because of service record and the possibility of getting another 30-50k miles out of it in next 5 years or so. Guess my cost analysis should include how much I'm willing to spend on 30k miles out of a highly used truck. Thanks everyone.  Undecided but the input is very well taken

Drive it, and see what you think.

It is your constitutional right to negotiate a price, so if you like it, offer them something.
