Mysterious Clicking cound

Recommended Posts

2003 Chevy Silverado 4wd (manual lever not push button)  220,000 miles

So here is the rub.  For well over a year I have heard a clicking noise while in motion.  Started I could hear it faintly while driving next to a building for barricade.  It has been getting progressively worse to the point I can hear it coming through the floor board.  Have had several mechanics look at it with no success.  Joints good according to mechanics, Had transfer case & transmission fluids replaced, & trans filter.  Nothing abnormal to report when this was done.

It is a constant noise.  Does not change with turning, braking, or increased rpms.  It does become faster as speed increases.   In the attached audio clip you will hear it constant and slow down when I go to turn (blinker noise) then speed up again.

Not sure where to go next.  Don't want to put thousands into it guessing on the problem.  Any advice or comments much appreciated.

Maybe get the rear wheels up on jackstands, chock the front wheels and run it up to speed (say, up to 40 or 50 mph) and see if you can hear the sound.

You may want to also examine the tires for anything stuck in them.  On my truck, I've heard a tick-tick-tick driving next to a wall with the window up, and it's been something metal jammed in one of the tires.
