2020 Diesel Regeneration Process: Doesn’t Inform Driver

So I have this issue with not knowing when my truck, a 2020 2500HD is undergoing regen because I drive short distances, long distance and everywhere in between. Given the EPA requirements here, a regen is necessary or we end up with costly problems. Now why GM decided that I do not need to know when the process is occurring is a mystery not only to me but every diesel owner. Sure I can pay $800 for an iBank but has anyone here reported this to their dealer? I have and they are clueless to what a regen is or what. 

 

GM should fix this or have cash on hand to pay for our repairs since we didn’t know we were harming our trucks LOL. Really though, how do we know?

I have a 2014 Cruze diesel and use a Scan Gauge II to keep track of when it goes into regen.  The Scan Gauge II cost me $150.  Love it.  Why they don't let you know when it is in regen is a mystery.   I have gone as far as  when it started to regen right before I got home to drive around until it was done.  I even sat in the driveway and kept the rpm's at 1,500 to keep it going until it completed.  LOL

Has anybody used bluedriver (https://www.bluedriver.com/products/bluedriver-scan-tool).  It supposed will show your live regen status.  I have never used it, but have been looking into it.

That's been a question for debate as long as Dmax has used DPF (with started with LMM, in 2007). 

GM intended that it be transparent and not be an issue to the operator. 

 

If it becomes a problem for your truck, it will let you know. 

 

Regen does not have to be completed in one start cycle.  My LML was driven for many years in mostly short trip service .  It was very common for it to have regen split over 2 or more trip segments.  It never did give me the 'keep driving' message.

 

I've had the message once with this truck. It came on as I was arriving at an appointment so I didn't 'keep' driving'  When I came out from my appointment the message had cleared anyway. 

 

 

You'll like learn to 'hear' the exhaust differences, and recognize the abnormally low fuel economy during regen if that's one of the screens you watch.

 

IMHO, there is no 'need' to know'that it is in regen.

The standard iDash supergauge from Banks is under $300. If you dont want the derringer or the ability to record data all you need is a suction cup mount and you will have all the data and more than you could ever want. Set up custome pages, and pop up alerts to include regen cycles.

I've noticed it by the garbage gas mileage the quickest. It happens for me about every 800 miles however I have mostly highway miles

When I had my 2015, the exhaust smell, exhaust sound (mainly at idle) and lower MPG (while looking at the DIC) were how I knew it was doing a regen. Unless you try to be aware of them, you'll rarely know when it's doing a regen. Pretty smooth, honestly. Not sure if the newer ones would be more or less noticeable for those "tuned" to the differences.
