GM Protection Plan Pricing and Negotiation

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I know there have been some threads on pricing and discounts, but I wanted to focus on the GM Protection Plan (extended warranty), specifically.  With all the cameras and sensors on this truck, I am definitely contemplating getting some sort of extended protection.

Has anybody been able to successfully negotiate down the price of the GM Protection Plan (Total Plus, for example)?  If so, what did you end up paying.

Also - has anyone compared the GM protection plan to other plans on the market and decided one is markedly better over the other?

I am a Canadian customer, so any specific Canadian examples would be welcome.

Thanks.

I am also Canadian.  I don't usually buy the protection plans but I have been contemplating it for the same reasons as you.  I guess in the end it will really come down to how much coverage you actually get vs the cost.  The protection plans are there to make money, so I am not really convinced that it is in my best interest.  If something goes wrong, it is probably cheaper to fix it myself rather than pay up front warranty costs for something that may never break.

Yes, agreed, it is a money grab for them.  My nephew works in a finance department at a non-GMC dealership and he says they literally make $100's of thousands of dollars on these types of add-ons.  He did say, as well, that they are completely negotiable.

The only thing that keeps me on the fence is we had an Acadia a while back and the blind spot warning sensors went south on it.  The repair for that was just north of $3,000.  In that case, the EPP would have been worth it.  I guess it is similar to insurance - you hope you never need it, but you have it for peace of mind.

When are you expecting delivery?  I'd be curious to see what kind of quotes we both get on it.

Two things disappoint me about the current Protection Plan offerings...

- They're no longer a GM product.  They're now managed by AMT Warranty as an authorized third-party provider.  Ford and FCA service contracts are factory plans.

- The longest available GM plan is 5 years/60,000 miles - the Duramax warranty alone is longer than that.  Ford offers up to 8 years/150,000 miles and FCA up to 8 years/125,000 miles on their service contracts.

GM/AMT - is 7y/100,000mi too much to ask for?

Interesting, I am going to have to check around here in Canada to see what is comparable.  I bought the extended warranty on my 2018 Traverse and it was an 84/100, and by all indications it was a GM managed extended warranty.

AMT came on as the extended plan contractor for the 2019 model year in the US.  Canada may still have a factory plan or a different Canadian contractor.

My TPW is March 2, so hopefully have the truck by late March/early April.

Yes, same as mine.  I wrote my dealer today to get more information on the product as well as a ballpark price.  I will let you know what I find out.

I ordered a Sierra 3500 Denali Crew Cab, short box - also in Dark Sky Metallic.  Looking forward to seeing that colour in person, looks great in the pictures I have seen.

Did you get a good deal?  I got about 12% off MSRP, but man did I have to fight for that.  In Alberta here, they just won't give up anything on those big trucks.

Funny you should say that, I called every dealer in BC and Alta and ended up finding the best deal in Edmonton.  I ultimately ended up convincing my local dealer to come close enough to the same deal to make it worthwhile at 12% off MSRP.  I had to work really hard to get to that number though.  I ended up about $1400 higher but I don't have to travel to Alberta to pick it up so I was able to justify it.

Are you counting the $2,000 manufacture incentive when you say you received 12% off MSRP?

Yes - 9.9% without incentives ($2000 not included), 12.0% with incentives ($2000 included).

I was told by the sales manager that it was $500 above invoice before incentives, however I did not see the invoice price and cannot verify.
