Engine Temperature

Recommended Posts

Question, I have owned a 2013 and a 2017 Duramax HD pickups, the temp gauges in both trucks would come up to 210 ish pretty quickly and stay there, never a problem. My new 2020 Duramax is very slow to warm up and has never gotten to past the first line past 160. Does not throw a bunch of heat either. Is this normal for the new trucks, it has 220 miles on it. Thanks

One of the key upgrades to get the new towing capacities was to the overall cooling system. These definitely seem to be running a lot cooler than my previous Duramax, and neither of my last 2 came with a winter grill cover to help it run warmer in cold temps...

Previous generation trucks also kind of lied in the cluster. The GMT-900 platform would say 210 when in reality the coolant temp was only around 190-195ish. That carried over in the K2 trucks as well.

The newest T1's and 2020 HD's get much better clusters and display a more true coolant temp. So if you are indeed running that low you may want to get a grille cover if you live in a cold climate.

I have a 2020 duramax and mine runs cool also. It takes quite some time to pass the 160 mark. I took it to the dealership and they told me what (what the above person said) that the gauges are more accurate now. The temp gauge never stays in one position either.  It kind of floats between 180 and 170. Also the heater takes a longtime to get warm. I guess this is the new norm.

Sounds like one of the thermostats is stuck.

Mine seems to run on the cooler side as well - 160's - 180's maybe. But seems to have decent heat still though.

I thought they increased cooling fan to 30", assume that has something to do with the coolness. I do know that that when its colder out, I have seen the grill shutters shut.  I assume that's to help to warm it up faster. And I have the auto high idle turned on - in the radio setting.

Yes the cooling system has more capacity on the 2020, towing 17k I have seen it get to 185ish.

I have a Derringer and idash on this truck and had the same on my 2018.

The statement earlier about the dash lying is absolutely correct, dash was 210 all the time on my '18, but the Idash reported the actual temp which was 180ish most of the time.
