California resident buying new from out of state.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Are there any CA guys in here that have bought/ordered from out of state?

The out of state dealer states..... This truck will have NE1 emissions. It'll have the California Class standard sticker, but will still need to get an emissions test done prior to registering it because of the out of state purchase......

Any of you guys do this?

Whats involved with the emissions test?

Whats involved with the CA DMV registration?

Thanks,Steve.

I bought my 2500 in Idaho -- Dennis Dillion.  I'm from Calif.

You will need the following:

1.  Vin verification by the DMV.

2.  Smog

3.  Vehicle weight certificate.

Usually the out of state dealer has an agancy that will do the paper work and submit it to the DMV.

Its pretty simple.  I got all 3 docs done in one day.

I bought a car out of state and brought it to CA.

jl449 hit in on the head - dealership should do the DMV paperwork (good news:  you'll probably pay the CA sales tax at the out of state dealer, I think it wasn't always this way, but is now).  I had to call my dealer a few times the closer it got to the temp plates expiring (they can also email you new temp plates if the CA plates don't show up in time).

If you're new to CA and pickups, you'll need the weight cert because its getting classified as a commercial truck (bad news:  you pay more on the registration every year, only upside is you get to park in commercial parking zones in cities).  You can get around this with a permanent bed topper installed.

For the CA VIN verification doc, I HIGHLY recommend going to a 3rd party and paying to get this done unless your local DMV isn't a clown show and you have a day to kill.

If you are ordering one from an out-of-state dealer there are option codes the dealer can use so it will get built with the correct factory cert.  The system also allows dealers to order the correct emissions/certification for vehicles that will be registered in a state that has different emission requirements than the one they do business in.

Dealers that commonly sell into Cali should already know all the details necessary -- and might order some of their stock orders that way.

FE9         Emissions, Federal requirements

NE1         Emissions, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington state requirements

NB8         Emissions override, California (allows a dealer in states that require California emissions - California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island or Washington - to order Federal emissions for a vehicle that will be registered in a state that has Federal emission requirements). Do not use for vehicles that will be registered in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island or Washington.
1 - Requires (FE9) Federal emissions requirements. Not available in Maine or Vermont.

NB9         Emissions override, state-specific (for dealers ordering vehicles in (YF5) or (NE1) emission states - California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington)
1 - Allows a California dealer (YF5 emissions) to order (NE1) emissions with (NB9) emissions override code for registration in (NE1) states; or, a Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington dealer (NE1 emissions) to order (YF5) emissions with (NB9) emissions override code for registration in California.

NC7         Emissions override, Federal (for vehicles ordered by dealers in Federal emission states with (YF5) or (NE1) emissions - Not required for vehicles being shipped to California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont or Washington)
1 - Requires (YF5) California state emissions requirements or (NE1) Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont or Washington state emissions requirements.

YF5         Emissions, California state requirements

I have no idea if there are any actual differences in the way they are (currently) being built or if the codes have been left in place just for certification paperwork.
