It’s OK to tell me I’m over reacting.

Recommended Posts

I would bring it up to the sales person and service manager. I wouldn't really ask for anything, just make sure that they shouldn't do this and the tech should be ashamed for doing this. Make sure they they do not wash the truck, if there treating brand new trucks like this, how are they treating their wash mits.

The only thing that touches my paint is MY OWN washing equipment. My truck is not a chair, a shelf, or a leaning post. I don't even lean over the fenders or bedsides without covering them. I wont even let my dealership wash my truck. They did the first wash on my new 2010 and spider-webbed the entire truck, I refused to take delivery until it was polished and they extended my extra paint warranty by 6 months because the clear coat had to be taken down. I was furious.

Same thing happened to me with my 2005 Canyon for recall work. spider-webbed the right side of truck. they said that it came in that way. i ended up buffing the right side, (it want too bad but really pissed me off when the left barely had any marks and the right had millions).

Just look at it, if there are marks bring it up, it not no worries and move on. Setting something up against it doesn't do any damage (unless it is a sharp piece of metal) or they move it against it.

Does it being an $80k truck make it different than the guy that bought a $60k truck in how it is treated? Not sure how price is a derivative of treatment. Did you pay $80k or was the sticker $77k and you got it for $62k before trade in?

Now L86's was an over reaction, he must be a pleasure to deal with...

An overreaction eh? How so, please explain.

I bought a brand new truck, the dealer damaged every single panel on it before I took delivery. I told them what would make me "happy" and they willingly complied. I have bought over 15 trucks from this dealer since 2004, so believe me, I am an absolute pleasure for them to deal with. I just don't except brand new damaged merchandise, neither would any rational person that doesn't like being taken advantage of. It's not like I walked in there screaming at them demanding somebody gets fired. I am a business owner, it is my job to know how to approach situations like this. We both walked away happy and I continue to business with this dealer. In fact, I have a $250,000 contract to do some work for them this year. So maybe just worry about yourself and not how others solve their problems.

Would you just say "meh, good enough for me" when picking up your brand new top of the line truck and it was scratched all to hell like someone washed it with a scotchbrite pad? Not likely, and if you would you're a fool for letting a dealership walk all over you.

Easy, buddy.  When you start saying things like "My truck is not a chair, a shelf, or a leaning post. I don't even lean over the fenders or bedsides without covering them..." you make it sound like filling up your washer fluid is a 30-step procedure.  Do you make people take off their shoes before climbing into the bed?

No obviously not, but I don't purposely beat it up or let other people beat it up. If you know anything about GM paint you know how fragile it is and will do what you can to keep it looking the way it does when its new. I am meticulous with my personal trucks. Which usually involves not leaning up against my paint with your dirty/sandy work coat, sitting on the bedsides with your jeans rubbing the paint, writing your name in the dust, or leaning over to fill my W/W bottle with the brass zipper on a Carhart jacket.. If you're rocking sweat pants and a t shirt, yeah sure touch it if need be, that wont hurt it I have ceramic coating. Just don't neglect my truck because you don't give two sh!ts about your own car. I have plenty of bruises and scratches in my work trucks, but I keep mine weekend truck clean as possible.

It comes down to respect, treat others belongings the way you want yours to be treated. Im not saying for the OP to raise a fuss, just saying I would if there was damage to the extent like I experienced. I'm not talking about a light swirl mark on the tailgate either, they scratched the whole truck's black paint up so it looked like complete garbage from 30' away in the sun. They acknowledged than their employee damaged the paint, and they corrected it with a polishing and extending my extra paint warranty. Everyone walked away a winner in the end. I don't think asking someone to fix the damage they cause, especially before taking delivery, is unreasonable. But to many fanboys on this forum, any complaint directed at GM is unreasonable. They could sell half of you a polished chromed out turd with a bowtie on it and people would be on here saying its the best product to ever hit the market, a little smelly but shiny and awesome.

You do you.  I don't treat my truck like grandma's wrapped-in-plastic chesterfield that people are barely allowed to look at, let alone touch.  I look after my vehicle, but not to the point of losing sleep over it.  In 20 years, the majority of our trucks will be crushed hunks of steel anyway.  Feel free to beam with pride for having the shiniest hunk.

In response to OP, I wouldn't get all hot and bothered without first seeing if there's any actual damage.  Life's too short.

Agreed, my 2018 work wagon has three small dents in it already, I'm not overly worried. I even have a self inflicted scratch on my personal truck, I haven't bothered to fix it. I just try to be proactive in preventing senseless damage as anyone would with a $50,000 "investment". I turn them over every 5 years or so, you get a much higher resale value if you don't scratch the crap out of them and beat them up. The truck I am speaking of I got $3,000cad more than the KBB high value when I traded on my current truck. Could have been up to $7k less if it was rode hard and put away wet. I am also in a position where my personal truck is like my "Canadian Corvette", its a summer vehicle. I have work trucks that I do my chores and work with. I would own a C6 Z06 instead, but our roads are complete crap in the North so this is my best option for a nice looking, comfortable, powerful vehicle. Most people have one truck to do it all, leading to more wear and tear.

My point is simply that if a dealer makes a mistake and damages your new vehicle, they should feel obligated to right the wrong. You look after your truck as you say, you wouldn't except delivery if it was scratched all to hell on day one. That's like buying mouldy bread from the store at full price. Maybe some people would, in that case, you do you. Glad we could see eye to eye. Have a good wknd Salsa.

So my new truck (order from the factory) showed up at my dealer. On the way home from work last night I stopped by the dealership (they were closed) to see if I could find it. As if turns out it was in the bay having the standard black wheel moldings swapped out for the optional color matched ones.

For some reason I am mad as hell that there are these cardboard boxes leaning up against my new truck. I know it’s a truck. But it’s an $80,000 truck. I’m not gonna do that to it when I get home. I didn’t say anything to my salesman but am considering it.
Am I over reacting? Be honest. Don’t tell me what I want to hear if you think I’m wrong.

Careful!! If you complain to the salesman, he might offer you a free wash and detail. You DEFINITELY do not want to let them do that!

That said, no harm no foul. Those guys see ton's of cars/trucks roll thru their shop and they just don't see them they way an auto enthusiast like us would. Inspect it really close, if there are no issues, no harm no foul. If there are issues, use this photo and pursue arrangements to get the fix handled.

I wouldn't be thrilled with seeing the boxes leaned against it, but before you get too bent out of shape see if you can find a scratch.  If so, they should buff it out.  End of story.

I completely understand the people wanting to keep their vehicles as nice as possible.  I do the same and my new truck will get treated like it's cousin and garage mate the Corvette.  We have a work truck for rough jobs, the new truck is supposed to look pretty and haul us around the country with the RV.

Agreed.  I usually turn my trucks over every 3 to 4 years and sell them privately to maximize value.  It's a much better experience when you don't have to explain dents, scratches, scuffs, etc.

Many times cars are repaired/painted at the dealership without ever being disclosed to the buyer. Many are damaged in transport. You really need to feel door edges, inside fenders, and wheel wells and look for dust in paint. If it was repainted one can usually feel where it was taped off but it’s no guarantee. I have seen $150k cars come right off ship at port damaged. They have a body and paint shop right there to fix before they even get to dealer.

Well he's fine. No scratches. They put him in the show room today until I can pick him up on tuesday.  I went there after work and there is zero sign of boxes on that passenger side. Little scratch on the tailgate that I will mention.
