Power down tailgates... the solution to a problem nobody had [emoji23]
[emoji3516]Right!? THANK YOU!

The tailgate is light. Give me a manual latch and the ability to seal my tonneau cover. I'm good.

Exactly what I thought as well! It's kind of a cool "toy", but I don't really know a practical use for it. My first question was, "is there a way to open it if the battery is dead?" Answer, "charge the battery".  I didn't think to ask, "what if the latch goes bad?" You need to open the tailgate to get the inside panel off to gain access to the latch! This will turn out to be a GM dud I'm thinking.

19 Silverado RST and mine does not have the alert either. I have to make sure to slam my tailgate closed due to the dealer installed tonneau cover, otherwise it will click and look closed but has come open while driving. I have tried every way possible to get an alert including hitting the interior button, exterior button, not fully latched then driving, engine on or off first... Nothing.

If the dealer installed the tonneau, he installed the wrong tonneau cover for the electric drop gate. My RST has the dealer installed off road appearance package which includes the OEM rollup tonneau cover with the chevy logo on top of the cover. This cover is designed with a rear curtain seal that goes touches the back of the tailgate and there is a 3/4" gap between the tonneau cover and the top of the tailgate........no part of the cover or rails touch the gate when closed so it can be closed with one finger.

No alert? You have to shift from Park to get into gear.....when you  pull the lever through Reverse look at the camera image and if you are looking at the ground, the tailgate is open.

To each their own on the tonneau cover but I'm a hard top girl myself. This particular tonneau cover was already recalled by GM once for safety issues (flying off while driving) but all they did was change the hardware, attach it way too snug in the middle of the bed and didn't adjust it properly. I purchased weather stripping to attach to the back to keep out the rain and realign the cover again myself as the dealers don't seem to care how they function after install. I will be replacing the cover completely with a Bakflip or retractable tonneau in the future but in the meantime I'll work with what I've got.

As for shifting into drive and passing reverse... If you read the whole comment you responded to I mentioned the tailgate clicks and looks closed but later opens when driving. This would indicate the reverse camera shows the tailgate in the closed position when shifting into reverse [emoji6]

I had the ReTrax powered roll up w/remote tonneau on my 15 1/2 ton. It was nice.  Didn't put one on my 3500 Duramax because of the 5th wheel hitch. When I considered it for this 2020 1/2 ton, I decided I'd just keep my truck a truck and not try and turn it into a wagon/SUV. Toolbox, bed mat, done.

Thanks for the ReTrax tip. I'm glad the toolbox solution works out for you as that helps with the tailgate issue.

Living in the Pacific Northwest and hauling more than just tools leaves about 2-3 months of the year of bed usage without a tonneau cover unless I want everything to get soaked or easily stolen. A toolbox also takes up considerable bedspace when loading quads and other toys so an SUV style vehicle with optional bed works for me [emoji4]

I understand that. I used mine differently when I had the ReTrax as well. Put the rubber gasket around the tailgate, and it was totally waterproof.

  • 2 years later...

I had a 2020 Denali and it had a warning for tailgate open as well as inner tailgate open

i just traded in the 2020 for a 2023 Denali ultimate and I only have inner tailgate open warning

not sure if it’s not working or gm took away the option of tail gate open warning

this sucks because it’s very easy to hit the button by accident when you’re reaching in the centre console in front of the gear selector to get something
