2500 vs 3500 torque limiting?

I agree when reading that.  That said, the other article states something different.  

 

The 2019 2500's had a standard smaller axle and the 2500/3500 SRW diesels had a larger axle.  This may still be the case which would suggest 12" on the SRW's with a diesel.  However, the article you quoted states only the 3500 gets a 12" axle.  Like I said earlier, the 2020 2500 and 3500 diesels "look" the same when viewing them parked side by side on the lot...so if the 3500 SRW has a 12" axle and the 2500 does not, its not visually apparent.  This is what suggests possibly only the DRW has the 12" rear.  I don't know...

I did some research on ACDelco's website (https://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/catalog/catalog_search.php).

 

I noticed that it seems like getting the 12" rear is an "it depends" kind of thing. The 11.5, at least from this part catalog, can come on a 2500 or 3500, however, it also appears that the have a specific part for the 3500HD as well, both in SRW and DRW.  This is the way I read into this: If you buy the DRW, you get the 12". If you buy a 2500, you get the 11.5. If you buy a 3500SRW then there a chance you get either 11.5" or 12" depending on the specifics of the order.

 

Either way, I also see there is conflicting views/articles on the torque limiting in 1st. Who knows what is true on that one?

The parts house will sell you anything that will "FIT" your truck. What comes as a STOCK order and what comes as a SPECIAL ORDER will be up to you when you order. I will call the service department and ask what they show, as to the options available.

2019 and newer trucks now have a new version of the American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) 14 bolt differential. The shape and bolt hole pattern are very similar to the pre–2019 covers. Pictures of the new stock cover and new and old gaskets.

We have heard this has a 12 inch ring gear.

To make covers for this differential, we are using the castings of PML part number 11147 and updating the bolt hole locations.

Applications

We have seen this new differential on 2019 and newer Ram 2500 and 3500 and 2020 GM 2500 and 3500 trucks.

For pre–2019 trucks with the AAM 11.5, 11.8 differential, see PML Part Numbers 10361 (Ram 3500), 11147 (Ram 2500) or 9511 (GM trucks).

Gas 3500 srw have 11.5 in and Diesel 3500 srw have 12 in.  

 

All gas trucks have 11.5.

All 20 series diesels have 11.5

All 30 series diesels have 12.  

 

It is as simple as that.
