3k Mile OCI

Recommended Posts

Minimum requirement oil packages aren’t doing their job. API has “FINALLY” started to confront the fact that today’s higher tolerance motors ARE NOT as compatible with these engine oils as they’ve been lead to believe. I’ve preached NON STOP about buying better quality oil with higher cleaning and protection packages and instead, it’s always about buying the cheapest minimum requirements set forth by the auto manufacturer just enough to get them through the manufacturers warranty period.

Early OCI’s is just the beginning!

Speaking of OCI’s, I will no longer be using Wix WL10255XP filters. I switched to them from Amsoil filters and have experienced negative results, they’ve all leaked requiring unusually more tightening and topping off. In addition, I’ve noticed lower oil pressure on my oil pressure gauge which never happened before while using Amsoil filters.

I’ve got plenty of oil left but currently waiting on my filters to arrive.

Question: how often do you guys change your engine air filter, do you do the manufacturers recommended or sooner? I do mine every 10-12k miles especially during high pollen months.

0w-16. How much lighter can they get.

Question is, how much more sensitive are the newer engines going to be? This is why, yesterdays minimum requirements are no longer acceptable for tomorrow’s higher, tighter tolerance and more efficient driven motors.

Easy there guys. The new standard is for 0W16 oils only. When they get around to 0W8 and 0W4 and 0W each will have it's own standard. This standard is NOT BACKWARD compatible.

Ever hear of the Stribeck curve? These lighter weigh oils are the result of finer finishes.

This has got nothing to do with detergency or ZDDP loading.

Image result for stribeck curve

Note that there are many things in play here. The result is that the required film thickness is the result of surface roughness, speed and load. The smoother the finish, the lighter the load (in stress per unit area)  and the faster the speed the thinner the film it takes to prevent friction caused by metal to metal contact. It is just a happy coincidence that film thickness and viscosity are directionally proportional.

Non the less, newer vehicles are changing the way we think of engine oil and tomorrow’s requirements.

I will agree that we get accustomed to a 'thing' and resist change to the 'thing' as we have grown accustomed.

I could also say that about that 'thing' we are more or less ignorant. How many still believe that viscosity is a measure of thickness, in example? That 5W20 is a thinner base oil than 5W30? That large doses of detergents have no effect of the ability of EP additives to do their job? That...…….

Shoot, I can't even make it to 3,000 miles in 6 months LOL. I don't even track my miles on a change, it's just twice a year. Once around April and once around November. If I drove to work 6 days a week for 52 weeks, it's only 2,500 miles total.

To answer the air filter question earlier. Every couple years for me. Or until I get rid of the truck, whichever comes first haha.

I clean the MAF at least once or twice a year though.

I change mine every 12,000 miles. I also clean my throttle body and MAF sensor when I change my filter.
