The dust covers are always a pain.  Sounds strange but take the bulb out, and get the feel for putting on the dust cover correctly.  It must line up correctly and then the twist on maneuver takes some elbow grease.  It's only a quarter turn to full lock but is tough.

On a different note, Morimoto used to sell dust caps with extended lengths.  Not sure if they are still available though.

What bulbs did you purchase? Many have larger heat sinks that wont allow for the dust cover to go on. A large reason I chose to go the route of HID lights when I did my truck in 2015. You can get smaller heat sinks, I believe Philips G7 has a 38mm heat sink version and a 52mm version. The 38's should fit. Also the RetroFitSource (I believe) makes a set of larger rubber dust caps for doing LED upgrades. You could look into both those solutions. Don't run with out a cap.

I had to mess with mine for a bit to get them on and I do this stuff for a living. By the 4th one I got the hang of it. Just have to get them lined up and twist. It takes a bit to get them lined up perfectly though.

Are you running the 9005 Morimoto 2 stroke for brights? My dust covers absolutely will not fit but I did notice the bright light dust caps are shallower because of clearance issues. I ordered my 9005's and selected the "extended dust cap" well it's a silly rubber thing that doesn't even fit a 2014 Silverado, like not even close. I'd be curious to see what others are running and if you were able to fit the dust cover on.

I purchased and installed Diode Dynamics led's in my 14 Sierra. Original dust covers work going back on just fine. No extra extended covers needed. Best led headlights on the market as far as I am concerned.  https://www.diodedynamics.com/hi-lo-beam-led-headlight-for-2014-2015-gmc-sierra-1500-pair.html

Your supposed to cut a hole in the dust cap and add the extender.
