700-R4 swap this weekend

Recommended Posts

Well it's finally in and working great, here's a list of modifications and cost(Canadian $$$$$$). BTW the truck is a 2wd.

Junyard 700-R4- $100.00

Tourque Conv. - $200.00

B&M Transpak - $90.00

Transmission Rebuild(incl labour) - $900.00

Bowtie Overdrives TCC Wiring Harness - $100.00

24 pack of Beer - $38.00

Total Cost - $1428.00

21MPG - Priceless

Heres the scoop on the install, the crossmember had to be moved back 2-3inches(can remember exactly if anyone needs exact measurements let me know), the driveshaft was the same length, and the bowtie overdrives harness is a pretty basic install, I opted for the Brake switch style wiring kit with the towing option Part#COMPLETEBRAKE www.bowtieoverdrives.com .

Whoa, 21 mpg? Dang.

Case of beer, now yur talkin'!

I am have been pricing 700R4 installation, and I think I found a place that will install it, along with a trans temp guage, and everything that is needed for about $1,500 US. I hope it would raise my mpg to at least 13. I am waiting for the place to give me a full estimate, and then hopefully (with the wife's blessing) I can get this done around January.

Glad to hear the conversion went well.

Rock on!!!! :thumbs::)

I really wanna do that to my '79 but the fundage just aint there and the engine needs rebuilt first. I'ts part of my plan. Engine first, then interior, then 700R4.

Question for ya - on the transfer case? Did you retain your stock case? If so, what is the model of it - 203? 205? 208? I've heard the 203's (like what my '79 has) are ultra-heavy and break the tailshafts off of 700R4's so I'd have to swap to a lighter 205 or 208 to not have problems in the future.

Congrats!

Torque Junkie - the mechanic I spoke to about my future tranny swap, said they would keep the transfer case in its current position. I am not sure what attachment they plan to use to make up the size difference from a TH400 to 700R4. My transfer case is the NP205.

I know what you mean about the funds. I hope to do this project late Jan, early Feb, pending no disasters between now and then.

Here was a great article I found about 73-87 Chevy's

My mechanic said the 205 is OK for the 700R4, so your mechanic said it'd be good to just keep your 205. My case is a chain-driven 203, considerably heavier and less efficient than the gear driven 205. The 203 was a full-time case (aka AWD) and was converted to part time by the previous owner.

With that in mind and what you've told me, I will plan on swapping in a 205 when I do mine.

Thanks for the info!
