Took my truck to the track

Recommended Posts

Nice!!! What kind of truck/configuration do you have?

I'll be heading to the truck with my Suburban if it doesn't rain tomorrow.

I have a 2500HD 8.1 Allison ext. I did the install myself with a few slight mod's to the brackets and the tube's. The only thing i do not like is the boost a pump i have had trouble out of it sence i installed it. I am trying to bypass it a this moment.

Tbyne I am interested to see what you suburban runs. Please let me know? One more question do you have nos?

It ended up raining today so I'll have to wait until next week. That will be the last day my "local track" is open (115 miles away). After that I'll have to take a ride that is about 250 miles each way so I can make a few 1/4 mile runs.

No nitrous on this one. Besides the supercharger the other mods are a Volant induction, TOG headers, Direct Hits ignition and electric fans.

04GMC8100HD,

He is running a stock engine, ats transmission, Quadzilla 215 Hp box, a VA pressure box, and a 100 hp shot of nitrous.

I do think that it is a fair comparison. You are running a supercharger, which should be equal to the turbo. Aside from the nos, he just added tuning. Before the nos he was running 12.7 sec quarter mile runs. Hell, my cheap $300 Superchip puts my Dmax into the high 14's, low 15's. Plus, I get 20-21 mpg on the highway!:confused:

Ok, diesal guys don't count. They can see well over a hundred horsepower by changing the chip. Add a free flowing exhaust, propane and/or nitrous then the truck is doing things that... well.. trucks aren't supposed to do. I've read about modified Dodge trucks that are putting down well over 1000 ft-lb of torque with just a handful of mods. That's sick! We won't even talk about how good the gas mileage can be...

A low 14 second run from a truck that started in the high 15s to low 16s isn't bad at all.

Sorry Tbyrne, no disrespect, but any run in the 14's with 496 cubes sucks. I know you sell all this stuff and have to do your PR work, but that time just plain sucks. If he's got the 3:73's, and his run was at 5000+ above sea level, then he's only slow.

Considering this guy's truck is forced induction only adds insult to injury.

Sorry for the insult HotRod. It's just that I'm still pissed at GM for choking the crap out of this motor. Anyway, I am currious as to how much boost (measured at the intake, after the losses and not the compressor) your SC gives you.

You also have to consider how much weight the 496 is moving. My Suburban weighs 6800lbs and I think the Silverado is close to 6000. Put the same motor in a vehicle that weighs 3500lbs and your looking at ETs in the mid to high 11s. I agree that GM is probably holding back with this motor. There are two marine versions that put out much more horsepower.

The kit on my truck is making 7.5# as it goes into the intake.

Your 7.5 psi boost pressure (at the intake) is respectable for a kit that requires no engine mod's. Is that correct?

My turbo'ed 1996 FJ80 Landcruiser pumps out that much at the intake and also required no engine mod's. My Landcruiser has a 4.5L engine(about 275 cubic inches) and turns-in 0 to 60mph times in the high 7's. Now that is not bad for nearly 6000 lbs vehicle. That's nearly half the cubes of my 2003 GMC's 496. My nearly 8 year old 100,000 mile Japanese LandCruiser will crush my brand new 8.1L GMC......Makes me sick!! By the way, my Toyota Landcruiser gets 15mpg, which makes me more pissed at GM.

AS I SAID EARLIER, I'M STILL VERY PISSED AT GM FOR CHOKING THE CRAP OF THEIR SUPPOSEDLY BAB BOY 496.

====================================================

On another note, 3500 lbs is about the weight of vintage (late 60's) camaro's and chevelle's; which with a normally aspirated, properly tuned, stock SS396 (100 cubes less) can turn mid to high 13's all day long.

Drop a tuned 427 with open chamber heads into one of those 3500 pounder's and watch the clock dip well into the 12's. Stick a super charger on it and........bye bye.

Most of the LS1 C5 and f-body kits produce 6-9 psi. Those motors are built for high end horsepower and can rev to over 6000 RPMs. The 496 makes it's power in the low to mid range and only revs to about 4800-5000 RPMs. I don't think this motor would like to much more than 8 psi. I've talked to some engine builders that said that it wouldn't be a good idea to run to much boost with the stock 8.1 bottom end.

I see a few degrees of retard in the upper RPMs. I don't think be running any more boost than this. I like the truck and don't want to tear it up
