Shock upgrade

Recommended Posts

I have Ltz with 6.2 and max tow package. I think I have an idea which way I want to go. I would like to upgrade my suspension without a crazy lift.
In the end I will keep my stock 20’s and will be going with a slightly larger than factory tire.

Do you guys know if King smoothie shocks work with our trucks? I like the coilovers I just don’t want to go much higher. I like the 1 1/4” rake I have now. Do I go coil over with a 1” rear block? Bilstein 4600? Icon stage one..? Do I need UCA’s with any cool over system? This is a dd with 4-6 hunting trips a year so nothing crazy off road wise. Any and all thought and recommendations are welcome!

king has an OEM kit only for 2019.....its adjustable from stock height up to 2.5 of lift in front...Pretty much all coil overs are similar with adjustability in front to raise...the tuners I talked to say anything over 2.5 in front ride may suffer, though some companies are putting spacers in to get em to 3+ inches.....UCA probably good idea but not totally necessary, obviously higher you go more so it is.....one thing to note is they (king, maybe others too) offer extended travel coil over if your using aftermarket UCA to give you more down travel....and you can stuff bigger tire with some aftermarket UCA than with standard UCA tho

the icons are bit more cost wise and hear they run a bit stiffer (just preference)

king, fox use progressive valving whereas icon is digressive...you can find difference between them if you search

believe all are rebuildable, serviceable and can have em valved for specific need or preference....

Went with the CST coil overs on mine.  With a 1.5in block in the rear. (Should have went 2 inches in the rear) I Eventually need to get the upper control arm but they come stock with a 2in level and you can adjust them up to 3 inches. I don’t dip in the corners anymore they are smooth on all bumps and dirt roads.  Install wasn’t difficult and I had the dealer do an alignment after I put them in. (Had to bring it in for the seatbelt recall anyway) 1B246E7E-4122-4C5F-84E4-E6D0D95E7E9A.jpeg.8cdcb5b1e8512d823b5c436146f4cf85.jpeg792EC61A-E014-4DEE-BFBC-C7D784DE19DF.jpeg.f7bcb49158d2b43380c0f0416472b8aa.jpeg

Great input guys! Justin what size tire are you running? You also look to still have some rake? Your truck look great by the way!
I will call a couple companies today and see if getting them set to 1-2” from the factory is an option. I assume doing any of this will void my warranty on the from and rear suspension parts?

I’m running 295/70/17 ridge grapplers And MR701 Method. They didn’t rub at all. Very close but didn’t have to trim anything.

The dealer told me that it voids some of the warranty depending on what goes bad first.
Then he also went on to tell me, “just take the shocks off and put the stock ones back on” and bring it in if something goes wrong. So maybe if you get it aligned bring it to a local shop so it’s not on the dealers record.

Awesome! That’s what I was thinking of..not having them in the “know”. How far out do the 295 poke past the fenders?

So I went with a 0 offset on the methods, 5EA31048-598D-4E50-ACDE-FCC96740053F.thumb.jpeg.29de9a3cec8b22c3f24c34f7686ccec2.jpegno spacer needed for the “new caliper”with the MR701. The side wall of the tire just pokes out, it ended up being perfect. I didn’t want to have rock and shit kick up and ruin my paint. But I wanted that aggressive stance.

I started a thread about mud flaps cause it does throw a little and the stock flaps don’t do shit. I’m sure with good mud guards I won’t have any throw back on the truck.

I had 4600s on the back of my old truck and they rode super smooth.  5100s up front.  The 5100s should come out this year according to the Billstein rep I talked to last fall.  I did 2" upper block in the front and a 1.5 in the rear.  Left me with .75" rake, unloaded.  I would probably do 2 and 2 if I did it again.  I added AirLift bags to the back to keep it from squatting under load.  It rides like a dream when I tow the camper.

I may change out the rear shocks though.  Not sure what to use.  4600s are not really for lifts.  Currently on the stock shocks I have 2" spacers on them and they ride okay.  I had ridge grapplers in 305/55/r20 on the truck and it rode super smooth.  But MPG went to hell.  I traded them out on 275/60/r20 (stock size 33s) BFG KO2s.  It tows great.  They are a hair louder and a little rougher though.  Better MPG, likely because they are narrower with less rolling resistance.

Glad I could help. Throw up some pictures on the thread when you get it all set up. I’d love to see how it came out.

I dont have the at3 or trail boss but I do have a custom with the icon stage 1 set at 3 inches. It rides pretty firm but not in a bad way. Has 295-60-20s20191215_113452.thumb.jpg.592e354d8fa48a889f6eba0af7d14338.jpg20191215_130002.thumb.jpg.6990d1e8d1eee5449a8120ed4b7876e1.jpg20191215_131343.thumb.jpg.2211c38518b44e4a40e943240160c088.jpg

What  did you do in the rear block wise?  Max I want to go is 2”
