I have a stock 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with the 8.1 Vortec. I came into some money and was going to by a newer 3500 Duramax. However, I am in love with my 01 and there is nothing wrong with it at all. Motor is still very strong (196,000) and the Alisson transmission can't be beat. With that being said, I am going to hang on to my truck, but would like to make it BAD A$$. I would like to go with a lift,(2-4-inches) so I can add 35" tires. What lift do people recommend along with shocks. I also want a few upgrades to my engine, like an air intake. What brand do you recommend among other things for this engine. First time posting to a site. Thanks

i have the exact same truck, with similar mileage, it is a great truck.  HOWEVER, lifting an IFS truck is not going to gain you anything as far as capability goes.  Unless you can add locking differentials and a much stronger front end, your modifications will be only cosmetic.  Adding larger tires and wheels will diminish its capabilities in every aspect.  A stock size tire in a more aggressive tread pattern can increase your offroad traction in certain situations at the expense of quietness, treadwear and what little fuel mileage our trucks get.  Our trucks weigh north of 6700lbs and are fairly capable in LIMITED low traction situations, but they will never be great off-roaders like a solid front axle truck can be.  I would keep your fairly rare big-block truck stock and get a project truck or jeep to make, as you say, "BAD A$$"
