Oil pan alignment 1/4 off on one side 03 6.0

Recommended Posts

I bought a 03 6.0 lq4 used off a guy. I replaced the oil pan gasket and realized the passenger side of oil pan is 1/4" hanging off the block. Now the driver side is flush! Since the tranny bell housing bolts to the bottom of the pan and will effect transmission alignment. I'm wondering if the the pan is off the wrong motor? Anybody know how to fix this

The oil pan on an LS engine must be absolutely flush with the rear transmission mating surface of the block.  That is because there are 2 bolts that bolt the transmission to the oil pan.  If the pan and block are not flush, either the oil pan or transmission bell housing will crack when you tighten the engine to transmission bolts.  This is why most LS oil pans have a warning about proper alignment cast right in the bottom.  Check with a straight edge or leave the pan screws loose until you mate the engine with the transmission, draw the pan back flush with the transmission, then tighten the pan screws.  The area on the right side of the block where the pan sticks out past the block in your first picture is where the starter mounts, that is not a concern.
