block heater temps

Recommended Posts

I miss the old days when you could plug it in and hear it. Im never sure if its on or not. My 2013 said -10 on the cord but I had hard starts at 20-30 below where it would start stall many times before staying running. I havent used it yet on my 2019 but soon will. On my previous trucks with the manual block heater it would start like it was warm after being plugged in all night in -20 and below temps.

Would be nice to know If its running. Curious if its -18* with or without the windchill it turns on. Makes it harder to tell since our trucks dont really show actual coolant temp.  My ram showed the coolant temp, not just a gauge that starts at a certain temp.  Was able to do a test on my ram. When plugged in, coolant would be 15* warmer then ambient temp.

Objects don't feel windchill. The ambient temp is all you need to concern yourself with.

I always modded the plug end by removing the thermostat to make it run all the time. Never had an issue do it that way. My current truck didn't come with a block heater so I installed an oil pan heater instead.

Guess that makes sense. Its currently -15*C, but -22*C with the windchill.  Only doing short drives to drive my son to and from work, so it would be nice if i could get the block heater to help the truck stay warm and not need to run it for 15mins before i jump in.
