Wrong spark plug?

Recommended Posts

I am checking spark plugs, had a pair of NGK LTR 5GP as spares but now I compare with the originals I see they have a shorter reach.

Anyone got a recommendation for whether these will be a problem or what else I should go for?

FYI truck has 110,000 kms on it, 2014, 5.3

I wouldn't run them.

Factory plugs are iridium and those are platinum plugs. Also those NGK's are colder plug as well.
Thanks, I only had the pair, bought when I got the truck just in case I needed a spare. They show as one of the correct plugs on the NGK site but I will pick up something else and swap them all.

I've seen some discussions about factory vs other plugs so will do some searching.

Thats why you reference the plugs go to the correct ones. I run Denso on everything I buy. Wouldn't have it any other way. Typically lasts a hundred thousand miles as would any other plug when maintain properly.

Have ordered AC Delco original part number via ebay, coming from China so this will probably be an after Christmas job but they're $30 CAD vs $80 from Canada for the set.[emoji53]

NGK makes a correct reach plug for the trucks. I had the same issue with some denso's I bought from either Jeggs or Summit. The reach was 1mm or 2mm shorter. I don't have the part number handy but I made a thread about it this year.

Essentially there are more than one site that has the wrong cross reference. Agreed denso's are great plugs I usually run them or NGK with great results. Platinum vs. iridium does not make any real performance difference in my experience - just longer life. The trucks do run a slightly hotter plug than the cars.

Yeah don't run that plug you have in the photos. I will run fine, but you will loose power and mileage. Cost me about 1.5 mpg, and lost acceleration. Thought they weren't that different then when NGK came out with a application for the 6.2 L86 I bought them , and when they came I noticed the longer "correct" reach and the truck ran noticeably better when installed and the denso's they replaced only had about 10k mi on them and looked new.

Ok, this is getting weird.

The AC Delco plugs arrived & they too are a shorter electrode than the originals despite having the same part number stamped on them.

Are my originals a strange batch or did the plug design change later on?

Well, ordering directly from China, you can't really know if the part is legit or not.  It might be a real acdelco part, or a rejected part, or a plug that just happens to have the acdelco markings on it.

And do you know if the plugs in the truck are original to the truck (as in, you bought the truck new)?

Agreed but how do I know if I'll get anything different apart from going to the stealership, the parts actually arrived from the US within two weeks of ordering but I don't know if they just import a load of stuff & re-sell. That being the case if I order from tubmangmpartsdepot.ca here in Canada how can I tell if I'm getting anything different.

Seems odd that the NGK plug I had bought a while back as a spare & this set are both different to the originals.

I had the truck from new & this is the first plug change.

I guess I will next go into the dealer & have a look at one of theirs with the same part number.

There at least is some checking as part of the regular distribution chain, so it's more likely you'll get a good part, but there's no way anymore to really tell if it's a real part if you aren't an expert on that part.

Anyway, I think you've got a good plan, going to a dealer and comparing the plugs with what they've got.  If that doesn't help, I would suggest directly contacting ACDelco about the difference in plugs with the same part number.

Local parts store should carry them as well for comparison

I had a couple of NGK plugs from the local parts store & they were the wrong length too so it's not quite that simple. I will give it another shot & take one out for comparison when I get there this time.

Had no idea it would be worth the time & effort to produce a knock off with all the right packaging, lettering etc. If the electrode wasn't different I wouldn't have questioned them.
