2020 AT4 Tire Chains

Recommended Posts

Explain why you think chains will have a problem on the newer trucks.

Proper fitting chains, installed correctly and used at the correct speed will work without problems on any vehicle.

You'd have to check the clearance between the chains and the wheel rotation sensors and routing of their wiring before using........and maybe allow additional clearance for ice and snow buildup on the chains along the sidewalls.

Better yet follow the advice in the owners manual.

"Tire Chains {Warning
If the vehicle has LT265/70R17, LT275/65R18, 275/60R20, or 275/ 50R22 size tires, do not use tire chains. They can damage the vehicle because there is not enough clearance. Tire chains used on a vehicle without the proper amount of clearance can cause damage to the brakes, (Continued)
Warning (Continued)
suspension, or other vehicle parts. The area damaged by the tire chains could cause you to lose control of the vehicle and you or others may be injured in a crash. Use another type of traction device only if its manufacturer recommends it for use on the vehicle and tire size combination and road conditions. Follow that manufacturer's instructions. To help avoid damage to the vehicle, drive slowly, readjust, or remove the device if it is contacting the vehicle, and do not spin the vehicle's wheels. If you do find traction devices that will fit, install them on the rear tires."

Any chain options? On 275/50/22

Not sure why anyone would use tire chains.  I don't know anyone in Alaska who uses them and I never see them on any vehicles.

+1, sounds like a time for better tires...

Sincerely, Canada

The issue is clearance between the tire and upper control arm. There is only about 3/4 of an inch. Design change for 2019 on half tons made front chains not possible. If you don't believe it, just reach over the top of the front tire feel the space between the edge of the control arm and tire. That space is marginal for cables. A wheel with more off set may give necessary clearance but will put the tire outside the fender lip.

Tires are #1 as chains should be rare. The V bar chains I like to use cannot be used with the factory 20 inch wheel. Currently using 1/4” spacers and front tire cables (Peerless Auto-Trac #0232810) factory tires is no rub (I’ll post some pictures).  Going one size taller to 275/65/r20 (size on 2500hd trucks) in Baja Boss A/T very soon and should still be ok as same width.
