How to replace seal on tranny shift lever?

Recommended Posts

Have a 2012 Sierra 2500HD with 6L90 MYD transmission.  The seal on the shaft at the left side for the shift lever is leaking and needs replacing.  I have the new seal in hand but can't figure out yet how to get the old one out.  It's pretty small plus it's recessed in the bore.  I'm thinking of *maybe* punching a couple of small holes in it and screwing in a couple of small sheet metal screws.  Then lever up on the screws.  Once I attack the old one, there's no turning back and don't want to create a disaster.  Any tips on this??

There's no way I can either how to remove the shift lever shaft.  I have the pan off and I'd remove the shaft IF it was easy enough.

I have the transfer case out because there was an odd noise somewhere.  Turned out to be the main input bearing was bad.  These transfer cases are fairly easy to work on as it turns out (except for unbolting it).  But the stupid little seal on the side of the tranny is a different matter...  ?

Thanks!

Yeah, I'd do the screw-thing to get the old seal out.  Make sure to not drive the screws in too far, you don't want to damage what's behind it (likely is a bushing, which isn't likely to get damaged, but still).  And don't pry against the shaft, as you don't want to bent it...
