Average cost for an oil change

Recommended Posts

8 quarts... when i get around to it but less than 5,000 miles. The key is to have a large magnet on the drain plug.. so you can see what iron is captured and use the M1 filter as it is 5 microns tighter.. i think 20 versus 25 microns.

I used to use them and believe M1 filters are at 30 microns. Don’t all the drain plugs have magnets on them and so am I right to say you’re spending approximately $40 per oil change?

So Walmart has the QS Ultimate for $17.97 for 5 gallons. The eight quarts would then be $28.75 and i think about $12 for the filter. So $45 would cover the taxes on the filter and oil. I spent so much on the truck... i consider the oil change to be insignificant. I also changed the air filter to a 99% from the factory 98%. This helps with oil changes as you can keep the particles out of the engine in the first place.

The mobil 1 filter has a 99% efficiency of removing 30 micron or larger.

Someday i am going to install a two stage filter on the thing like it ought to have.

I bought a drain plug with a real magnet on it. The factory on mine did not have one...

I have rebuilt plenty engines.. with the magnet you can see the knock on the drain plug well before you can hear it..

You’re right, paying a bit more than average on the oil you use is somewhat insignificant when compared to the cost of the truck as avoiding future repairs. The Napa Gold oil filter i believe is at 20-21 microns as well as the Wix XP, both around $10

What I find amazing is how cheap to use even expensive oils are. Now if we could get this result with gas......

You’re right, it’s nothing when you actually do the math. The higher end protection oils cost to run are approximately half to a whole cent extra per mile to run. Mine was approximately 2cents per mile, bizarre when you think of the actual up front cost difference. I’m intrigued to learn more about the Castrol Edge Titanium as well as the Penzoil “ULTRA” Platinum. Anyone have the specs on them?

A guy gets 17 mpg and pays $2.55/gallon or $0.15 a mile. You tell him he could lower his operating cost by slowing down and  you hear, "I didn't buy a truck for gas mileage." He will run 93 octane at a dollar a gallon more and run that cost up  a nickel a mile more than he has too because his 'butt' dyno says it's worth the expense.

Then he complains that a penny a mile being to much to pay for boutique oil. Tries to milk a half penny a mile more out of some $20 a gallon Wally World  "Full Synthetic" by running his oil twice the normal OCI. Spends a few hundred per OCI on UOA's to make him feel good about it too.

:idiot:

You’re correct, the world is full of them lol! I’ve seen people spend thousands on upgrades for their engines to breath better and still use cheap oil running long oci’s. Squeezing as much performance out of your engine requires highest quality oils available. Today’s oils are pretty good but for not even a penny extra per mile, the boutique oils look damn good but not really needed if you run short 3-4K OCI’s.

Just wish someone with Penzoil “Ultra” Platinum and Castrol Titanium Edge experience would chime in too. Anyone have experience with any of these two?

I’ve thought about having the dealership do mine as well but not after hearing horror stories of either using cheap recycled oil, not actually doing it, didn’t put exact amount etc.
Seems so much easier but just not worth the worries so I either do it myself or take it somewhere and give them $20 labor but almost always do it myself especially since it’s so much easier being lifted.

I’ve bought my cars and trucks pretty much at the same dealership for quite awhile. I belong to a club started by a radio station program called car pro. That checks dealers around the area with feedback from buyers. Those combinations gave me a little more confidence in the dealership. Oil changes, tire rotation, car washes usually around 60-80 dollars depending on vehicle. You still have to read your maintenance schedule to guard on the up sell.
