Overheating while towing

In the process of replacing radiator, fan clutch, water pump etc. Here is the fan-side of the radiator. Quite a bit of smashed fins. Do you think that is enough to cause my overheating issue? The pics don't really do it justice either.  I'm replacing it anyways, just wanted some reassurance that I'm heading down the right path.

Hi,

I'm wondering if you ever got your overheating issue resolved.

I am too having the same problem when towing. Mine overheats if I stay in place too long on an uphill or going in reverse when trying to place my trailer.

I had similiar issues towing a 6,500 pound camper and going at interstate speeds in the summer. I would watch my transmission temps rise, I had an Edge connected and could monitor Trans temp, Intake air Temp, Fuel rail pressures, and even fuel temps.

I have 2 07 Duramax's and we removed the radiators on both.

We discovered the "holes or air gaps in the cooling units get profrewssively smaller. As  air passes through the a/c condensor and then the intercooler, and finally through the radiator.

So bugs and debris will pass through the condensor, and intercooler then geet lodged between the intercoller and radiator.

Before removing our radiators, my trans temps would get to high and the fan clutch would kick in if I drove to long aboute 68 or 70 towing the camper.

After removing the radiator, I was amazed how much dead bugs and road grime were blocking the radiator. It took some cleaning to get it done.

I did not remove the intercooler and it took some wrangeling to get the radiator our by itself but it is doable.

NOW Afterwards: I took oour camper on a 5,000 mile trip last summer in late june and early july. Through Tennenssee, Alabama, Georgia, all the way to Key West. Went up and down hills and trhought the Florida Keys without ANY issues at all.

Never once, did hte fan clutch activate. I seem to remember my trtans ran about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the trip to Arkansas the year prior.

For whats it worth, I feel about 30 % of the radiator was being blocked.
