Dealer Forgot To Put Oil Cap Back On!! (JEEP)

First, as badly as some of us want to, lets skip the FCA quality jokes and instead give me advice lol.

Today we took my wifes 17 Renegade for an oil change.  Dropped it off and went to my parents in my truck.  Went back to dealer, she picked it up and drove it home.

Later this Saturday evening we took it to dinner.  I niticed an oil smell but was thinking it is just tjat typically stink you get for a short time after your vehicle is at a dealership.  Additionally I had to follow this older 'yota that was burning oil so i got that stank too.

On way home, i still noticed the smell, like a quart of oil was under my nose.  Got home, popped the hood, oil everywhere and no oil cap!!

What should my next course of action be? Sucks that its Sunday tomorrow so now I gotta take time off work Monday to deal with this.

I was thinking tomorrow to check oil level and maybe see if I can buy a cap at an auto parts store.  Then I can drive it to the dealer Monday and go from there.  Request them to reimburse for the capn do a hell of a detail to the engine bay, and quite honestly ask for a refund of the oil change.  A loaner would be nice so i can go work for the day while they clean it up.

Thoughts?? I'm a pretty level headed person and not the type who wants to demand a new engine,  you know what i mean...

Similar happened to me but, not as severe... Wife's 2018 Equinox had the dip stick left out and sitting on the cowl above the radiator... Went into the chevy dealer, spoke with service manager, he offered a free oil change + a full engine compartment detail... I was still not thrilled but, what else can I do... Next time I needed a oil change on the truck, took it there and the dip sh*ts forgot to rotate my flippin tires... How do I know? I had a rim leak on my right front tire that lost about 2 lb per week and low and behold it's still on the right front after the service was complete... Dunno if another dealer will do better but, the next closet dealer is about 1/2 hour away where as these guys are 8 mins away..

Take pictures for your records.

I would not drive it and grenade the engine, epically since you know what is up. Would check the oil, if it is really low, make them tow it back to the dealership to fix this.

You can probably go to their website and send pictures tonight, just to be ahead of the game, and have solid proof of what happened.

Be nice, and see what kind of free stuff is to be had, will make you a lot more quiet when you get the CSI for the service from FCA.

Looks like the only form of electronic contact I can do with them is a simple form on their website. No attachments allowed.

I have taken a picture... had to send to friends and family lol.  Dark out and bad lighting... tomorrow I will have to snap a couple better pictures.

I had the same thing happen to me on a Tacoma... on a free dealer oil change. Luckily the oil blew on the windshield and i caught it within a few days. Still a mess.

The staff that changes the oil.. are not the trained techs.. that you pay a hundred bucks an hour for. I am not sure what the optimal solution is, as everyone has different capabilities, tools and time. I change my own oil... i would probably pull the engine if i needed to.

I personally do not think it a dealer issue either. It is a generational issue at its core. Care and pride in the work is sorely missing in young people today.

Right, these are the entry level guys that are hopefully doing this as a first step into a successful career as a mechanic etc.... as you mentioned the care and pride just isn't there.

I think the mentality these days is "ill do this mostly good enough then pass it to the next person,  won't be my problem anymore".

I'm already telling myself to have subpar expectations for them with their clean up job.  I expect too much in this department since I'm an auto detailing nut lol.  More products to wash my truck than my hair and body LOL!

If that were not a true statement, I would have to ask for you "Man Card" back.....

Invent a soap spray cannon for your shower, and you will achieve God status....

That would be legit you could shower so quickly lol!  Heck all that needs to be done is add a canister inline of the water pipe for the shower head with a on off valve and done.

Or this!

Just to follow up on this, went to the Jeep dealership at 7:30am, it went really well.  I explained the situation and two service guys (one was a manager) walked out with me to peek under the hood.  Immediately the service manager said "We'll get this cleaned up for you and get you a new cap, it will take about 20 to 30 minutes.  Also, your next oil change is on us and we'll reimburse you for the temporary cap you bought at AutoZone".  I was super impressed by this, I didn't even have to start that conversation.  The guy also thanked me for my attitude and understanding as I didn't go in there raging,

About 20 or so minutes later everything was all set.  I was satisfied with the cleanup job, and it smelt like citrus lol. Love a good smelling APC haha.

They are also noting this experience on the service history of the vehicle.

So yea... no complaints besides some time out of my life... could have been way worse.

It’s great they took care of you. When I bought my truck the dealer was a 6 hour ride from my house. I get home and pop the hood and notice the cap for the radiator over flow is off and sitting on the air cleaner box. The transmission dipstick was not in all the way. Luckily no issues and no fluids spilled. But damn I was pissed after spending 50k+ to find that shit. Next time I’m looking under the hood before I sign anything. I did look over the car first though.

BINGO

People under 30 are the most entitled, over celebrated, under-worked, overrated, nonperforming bunch in the world. Yes, I will be 29 in January, and I'm not perfect, I am guilty of it from time to time, but I like to think i follow the old-timer mindset. Some of these young women who work as aides and nurses think they're literally saving lives for a living and having a massive impact on people. No sweetie, you're a glorified ass-wiping pill pusher. Get over yourself.
