Anyone else having cascading electronics failures?

Recommended Posts

I've seen reports of many of these issues on this board and others. Is anyone else is having all of them like me? As of today I have had:

  1. One bad parking distance sensor. (fixed)
  2. Driver's dash screen turning off.
  3. Reverse camera blue screen.
  4. Brake pad wear indicator failure.
  5. Blind spot assist failure.

The truck is at 3800 miles and I've been to the dealer multiple times. Now I'm waiting since 10/11/2019 for the dealer to get parts in to try to fix some of the other issues. To their credit they fixed the park distance sensor, although only after I threw a fit because initially they refused service. They claimed it was normal for one of the sensor to constantly go off if it got wet. Guess what? They replaced the one sensor and it's never happened since. Just like any other vehicle I've had with functional parking sensors.

The other issues have been happening on and off. The blind spot issue started this week. Now the truck constantly alerts me that something is left of me, and the right mirror works maybe 50% of the time. It feels like every week I'm facing a new electronics issue. At this point this is play by play exactly what happened with my 2014 RAM Sport, which I wound up selling at a loss after the dealers support essentially left me with "sorry it's your problem, if you wanna leave it for a month here we might look at it". That was when I swore off buying american, but I was tempted by this truck after reviews and I really liked it when I was buying it. Now every day I just think I made a huge mistake again.

To contrast this my 2017 audi which I bought in 2016 had two issues. One was a bad speaker, the other a cosmetic defect in a tail light. Both were fixed same day with a loaner provided each time even if I only needed it for a few hours. The dealer never argued about anything, they just fixed things fast. So far my GMC dealer which is highly rated in the area has had no loaner for me and the overall support has been argumentative, long wait times even though I have scheduled appointments, and just overall garbage. The worst part is my audi cost $10K LESS than this truck and they treated me like I bought a Ferrari, while GMC treats me like I'm bringing them an extended third party warranty beater.

Wow, sorry to hear about the issues.  GM tests all of this stuff in the worst conditions then they let us test it again after we fork out $60K plus.  I have not experienced too many problems with mine.  They fixed the brake wear indicator software, and I thought GM fixed the blue screen of death with a software update a while back.  Your driver’s side short range radar is behind the step pocket in the rear bumper.  They need to replace that “sensor” if your blind stop warning keeps going off.  Keep track of how many time you take it in for the same problems, GM is one of the few that are pretty fair with their buyback program.  I am not a mechanic and this is silly one, but make sure your infotainment setup software is updated.  It seams like it links to all of the electronics in GM vehicles.  Mine has taken 2 updates in 3 months that I have owned the truck.

Thanks for the intel. Especially about where the sensors are for the radar, didn't know they were in that pocket. I have been saving the paperwork from the dealer. I have checked that the infotainment software is the latest, the truck gets wifi where it's parked. For the other issues it seems like software isn't the problem. Here is what the work orders have had so far:

1. Parking Sensor - 84510253 - Replaced & Fixed

2. Master Cylinder - 84702004 - Waiting for Special Order 10/11/2019

3. Instrument Cluster - 84655444 - Waiting for Special Order 10/11/2019

So it sounds like they don't believe the software is the issue for the wear indicator. They think it's the electronics in the master cyl. I'm not sure how exactly it measures wear life, maybe fluid consumption? Or maybe the master cyl is wired up to the pad sensors and relays signal to the PCM. Not really sure. The instrument cluster they believe is the reason for the backup camera losses and cluster turning off, they said they see DTC U3000 Symptom 49.

I do not know a lot but I do know the parts that I worked on when I was at GM.  Your park assist sensors in the front and rear bumper have nothing to do with the blind spot warning.  For our trucks, yes they are behind the bumper in the foot step area.  I have no idea why the dealer simply hasn’t replaced both of them for you.  GM passes the warrantee cost along to the supplier so really no one at the dealer or GM should care about that cost.

Most of the truck brake pad wear indicator bogus readings were fixed with the software update PIT5695A.  For some reason your dealer must think the issue is with the master cylinder.  This brake system is electronic assist, not vacuum.  Maybe they saw something in the diagnostics that they did not like.  I cannot answer that one.  I was told that the pads do have wear indicators to measure the pad life.  I have not taken any apart yet to see them.

That error is not very descriptive but the dealer has a stored code to work with “DTC U3000:49 (Control Module: Internal Electronic Failure) - If at any time during normal operation the PSCM detects an internal hardware error, DTC U3000:49 is set.  That is a good start rather than no code.

Good luck, I know it is extremely frustrating with a new vehicle to have so many problems.  Make sure you keep all of your paperwork incase it turns into a buy back.

Thanks for the info! Really appreciate it. Electronic assist and issues with the master cyl definitely makes it a concern driving wise :-/, but I imagine they'd have said something if it was dangerous. Sensor wise I just had an unrelated issue with one of those park assist sensors, I realize it's not related to my blind spot warning problems. Hopefully when I bring it back for the master cyl and cluster they can get everything fixed.
