So I went thru a little patch of mud in my Boss, which is maybe 50ft slipping and sliding, then when I got back to dry ground my ESC light was on saying "service".

I parked it and went to bed. The next morning I cycled thru 4hi, low and 2hi until it shut off..

What's going on here?

It was probably slick enough that the ESC system couldn't fully control it. How fast did you hit the mud? I know it generally isn't a good idea to spin the wheels too fast.

Systems like that will routinely do self-checks and after a number of self-checks that are normal, it will turn off the service light.

You could scan it with a reader to be sure, but I wouldn't worry about it.

25 isn't bad. Who knows, maybe some water got into one of your sensors and triggered the warning.

I doubt you broke anything, since it went out so soon after. Stored codes that trip warnings will go out if the self test reports "ok" after so many cycles. You didn't do anything that drastic, but you have to remember your truck is a giant computer with lots of sensors, and any moisture ingress or maybe even the spinning of the wheels could have tripped it.

It's stored in memory so if you're curious, go somewhere that has an advanced scanner tool (mechanic or dealer) and have it read if you want piece of mind. Me, I'd ignore it.

I had the same thing happen to mine in Moab. I went down a trail that was 6” to 12” of sand down to a slot canyon.  I had to give it hell to get down to it and back out (uphill). How fast it got going or how many RPM I don’t know but I never redlined it.

I got got the same error and an email.  It did it another time just barely pulling my RV through sand.  I mean never above 5mph.

I drove it back home 1200 miles after our trip and not a problem since.
