Blew 6.2, gm denying warranty

Recommended Posts

Anything is possible.

Maybe the OP has a legit claim.

How does anybody know the truth but the tech who worked on the motor.

Maybe the tech is a liar.

No one will ever know.

I will add this though.

OP never mentioned he checks his oil.

We know some people wait until the low oil light comes on.

We could also think the computer had a glitch and the low oil light didn't come on.

Could it be a simple task of checking the oil may have prevented this?

Might be doing an oil consumption test instead of this situation.

Only the shadow knows.

:)

I get a low oil level when I’m missing about 2.5qts
The sensor is at the lowest point in the aluminum or upper part of the 2 piece pan. Also if sensor is unplugged it defaults and does NOT give a code or a low oil warning. So it is very possible to run on low oil and not have a light. Interesting part is if there is oil in the pump there shouldn't be a issue. However many do not know that we have 2 stage oil pumps so at warm idle we can have low oil pressure but at wot warm and in the 2nd stage we see (IMO) very high pressure. I run 7quarts oil then after 2 weeks I add what is missing but still it is 7-8quarts total. And a good week of driving can remove 1/2-1 cup of oil water mix in the catch can. Most water really.

Blew the 6.2 in my sierra, dealer claims i ran it low on oil. They claim they drained only 4 qts of oil and shavings, yet the low oil light never came on, check engine light never came on until after a bunch of smoke came out the exhaust. They denied warranty work and are wanting $10k to replace the engine. Has anybody ever been in a similar situation? Does the ecu log check engine lights/low oil pressure warnings? Can i fight it based on the fact that no light ever came on? Thanks for the help.

You need to know what failed

if it was for example a ring land, your truck could have easily just spit out a couple quarts in a few seconds through the pcv or even blew the main seal.

When you blow a ringland the combustion process makes it past the pistons and pressurizes the crankcase.

2017 sierra denali, oil changed regularly, checked regularly. stock 6.2, has never burnt oil, no leaks whatsover. No catch can. Truck ran perfectly fine up until this. 8qts 0w20

edit

didnt actually blow any holes. tech claims he dranined bunch of metal shavings. his words "blew the engine because of low oil"

my first post, yeah, so what? I like to read and use the search button. give me a break

Corrected

Missed that he checked oil.

I remember several years ago reading in the manual that there’s a oil low light. I imagine turning on the ignition would cycle the lights, so that helps to indicate working or not. A non working light would be unusual. Probably a catastrophic event happened and losing oil was part of it.

Point taken.

happened when I bought the truck. Didn’t think I needed to check the oil regularly on a truck with no signs of burning oil

BUTTTTT................

Nothing I have owned with a motor in 50 + years showed signs of burning oil but I still checked the oil regularly.

Cheap insurance and provides a history.

My routine is vehicles get checked every week.

Power tools before starting.

ATV before starting.

Not trying to cause an argument.

Checking oil is common sense to me.

I also check the coolant level at the same time.

Just throwing this out there. You know about the brake booster recall. I have read that if the unit begins to fail it will send metal shaving into the oil since engine oil circulated through the pump I believe. Also when that happens it begins to send oil through the tube attached to the master cylinder. Could be where your oil is going. Long shot but just my .02.
