Diesel to Gas

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

So I've got a couple diesel RAM 3500's for work and they work hard, get abused and so on - logging roads, blast rock, deep snow, plenty of mud and so on... Anyway, it is almost time for another work truck, possibly something shorter and I have seen, sat in and tested a GMC 1500 AT4 - all I can say is nice.

The question from the die-hard folks out there I am coming from the diesel world where the costs used to be well in favour of the oil burner but now, with all the equipment, filters, additives and just the cost of fuel it isn't anymore so does making the switch make sense when I'm ready?

thoughts?

I was cross shopping 1/2 tons, and 3/4 ton diesels.  End of the day I did not need the 3/4 ton capability, and chose the fuel econ and ride of the 1/2 ton.  I was never ever going to recoup my costs for the diesel and for the same price point I was giving up a ton of creature comforts.  If you don't need the capability, sure.  But if you need the capability of a 1-ton, I wouldn't switch from that.  And to throw another idea in your head, if it's just the payload you need and not towing, you could consider a HD gasser though, which would have significantly cheaper costs compared to the diesel.

As a diesel tech of many years most operators ran on the idea that if the truck was making money it was a Diesel. If the truck was for play it was gas. A lot of diesel owners still run by this rule as most people see one diesel repair bill and run back to a gas. If the truck is paying for itself, keep the diesel

I left diesel for gas and traded in my 16 2500 for a 19 1500.  Diesel was easily 40 cents higher, the oil filter was in a dorky place and don't get me started on the fuel filter and def fill location.  New truck pulls just as good and is way more fun to drive.

I and my whole family were diesel fans until the fuel change. My parents still drive pre change diesels. If you don’t need it don’t buy it. The 1/2 ton diesel jury is still out. We’ll see.

How often do you want to buy a new truck? From what I've heard, you're more likely to get 500,000 miles out of a diesel than out of a gasser. So if you want to drive it until it dies, the higher cost of running diesel may be offset by not having to buy a truck as often. But if you typically buy a new truck every few years, maybe gas would be the way to go.

Been through this..Always had Diesels (Duramax).  I convinced myself that the 1500 would be fine and the smoother ride would be worth it for the majority of how I use my truck.  For the most part that was the case (bought a 2017 Denali 6.2).  Power was great and truck did drive nice..until I hooked up my 30' enclosed trailer.  Anyone on here that say's they tow the same (I think I saw that comment on one of the earlier posts) is not being truthful.  There is NO comparison on how the two trucks tow.  If you need it for towing, especially if its a larger trailer, get the HD.

I personally prefer the way the Dmax drives.  My new 2020 HC almost drives half ton like but has incresed capacity, it would be worth your time to test drive one...You will be surprised.  Perhaps a good compromise would be a 2500 with the 6.6 gas.  If its gonna be a work truck to replace your Ram Cummins diesel, I don't see you being happy with a 1500.  IMO

I just picked up my '19 1500 to replace my '13 Duramax.... I just couldn't justify the additional expenses of running a diesel (fuel cost and maintenance) since we no longer pull a camper. For heavy pulling (for going power, stability under load, and stopping), there is no replacement for diesel in my opinion. For daily use, lower fuel cost, lower maintenance cost,  and ride.... the 1500 has my vote. The heaviest thing that I pull now on a regular basis is a 18' bay boat which I'm sure that the 6.2 will have no problem with.
