Questions Regarding Service & Maint. From Manual

Question

Hello all,

My truck is a 2017 Z71, 5.3.

I have been reading through my manual and marking down which part numbers to buy for replacing all my fluids and a few points in the chart I could use some help on:

Usage: Floor Shift Linkage, use Lubriplate Lubricant GM No. 89021668

Question: What "floor shift linkage" is this referring to exactly?

Usage: Front axle driveshaft splines, use Spline lubricant GM No. 19257121

Question:  Where are these splines exactly and is this something I need to lube?

Usage: Rear driveline center spline, use Spline lubricant GM No. 12377985

Question:  Where exactly and is this something I need to lube?

Thank you much!

Floor shift linkage will be for 4x4 without auto 4x4

The front drive shaft has a spline connection that allows the shaft to lengthen and shorten depending on the bump you hit

Rear is same as front.  Both ends likely have grease fittings you use to grease.

And if no one has told you before, unless your truck is parked with wheels off the ground its entire life, driven no more than a mile a year, use the Severe class.

Thanks! I have auto 4x4 so no need on that one. The splines though I don’t see any zerks... you are talking about ends of driveshaft at u joints right?

The front driveshaft splines go into the transfer case.  To apply new lubricant to it, you remove the driveshaft from the truck, apply lubricant, then reinstall.

Same with the rear driveshaft center splines (assuming your truck has a 2-piece driveshaft).  You remove the driveshaft, separate it, apply lubricant, reattach, then reinstall.

I would suggest not doing either of these unless you have the part out for some other reason, such as replacing the u-joints, or you are having a specific problem that you have narrowed down to those splines not being lubed.

Doug_Scott's mention of grease fittings are for u-joints, and your truck likely doesn't have greasable u-joints as GM has moved away from having grease fittings, as it makes the part slightly cheaper to not have them...  There are no zerks for applying lubricant to the splines.

My mention of grease fittings was specifically for the slip joints on the driveshafts.  Has GM not figured out that nickel and dimeing something that you selling for 10s of thousands of dollars is not the way save money yet?  Put than $0.39 part back in, and raise the price by a $1.00.  There, I just made you a 300% return on investment.  What am I missing here?  I realize that I have zero experience in saving money, but I have shitloads of experience in spending it.  That woman in charge of GM likely spent more for the clothes she wore to work today, than I have spent for the clothes I have worn this year, and if you toss in her purse and shoes, it will be very likely be what I spent for clothes in the last 4 decades.  And she gets the job.  Stupid part is, that is not the worst of it.  After likely 5 years, or maybe 10 years, she will qualify for a pension from GM when she retires.  Like she could not save enough from her pay to help offset the cost of not working.  Again, what am I missing?

The splines I am talking about are the ones on the front drive shaft.  If you follow the front driveshaft from the transfer case to the front differential you will find a shot where the driveshaft looks like it can get longer and shorter.  Those are the splines I am referring to.  Depending on the wheelbase of your truck you may have a 2 piece rear shaft, and in the middle you have those splines as well.  From previous posts here it would appear GM has removed the grease fittings that would make this greasing easier or at the very least possible.

Things change.  If a part becomes redundant, it often disappears.  New features appear that we never knew we needed! ? I'm sure there was an uproar when GM pulled the backup hand crank from their vehicles. The number and placement of ashtrays once appeared in brochures.  Of course cost is a factor in all aspects of manufacturing and careful attention is given to the benefits of all parts.   (The concern about the cost of clothing for a GM executive is unnecessary and could prove to be offensive.  I'm confident this is not the intent but personally I'd choose to reconsider and remove.)

Donstar, your posts are generally right on target, but on this I have to side with Doug Scott. If a GM executive doesn't have thick enough skin or more important things to worry about than being offended about an off the cuff remark about the cost of their clothing, there is no way they belong in the executive suite.

Is she comes on here and is offended by that, then I would have her ear wouldn't I?  When did the truth become offensive?

Severe class?  Only if you're an obsessive SAE-certified tech with too much time and $ on your hands.  We used GM's Normal maintenance schedule in our fleets, knowing that many of the trucks would probably fall more into the Extreme or even Severe class of usage, and never had any problems due to the maintenance schedule.  Couldn't afford the extra down time or expense to do otherwise, especially on trucks that get miled-out/traded every 3 years or so.

I was simply expressing my  impression which undoubtedly reflects a strong sensitivity to keeping my comments neutral. The ironic thing is that my effort sort of  failed.    I wasn't thinking for a moment that the CEO of GM would be seeing our posts.   I'm just not sure if comparable comments regarding money spent on clothing would be made if the CEO  was male.  Neither of you, or I, would intentionally offend a group based on gender or ethnicity.  I appreciate it when someone gives me a heads up that my good intentions may not be interpreted in the same manner by others.

I was not referring to what you have the dealership do, I was referring to what the average DIYer does in this driveway, essentially how the OP sounded in his post.  Been a while since I have seen how the manual lays out the service schedule.  I know the dealers tend to have ridiculous service schedules, at least the one that gets all my warranty work  and all the free servicing I managed to get thrown in at purchase time.

I am one of those that will go down kicking and fighting to keep my freedom to be politically incorrect.  I don't know which generation is responsible for this crap, but they got to go. I went into the local grocery store the other day and the racists bastards were selling crackers, big signs saying crackers on sale this Saturday.  Why aren't we protesting this racist crap?

Well, GM stopped putting grease fittings on slip joints awhile ago.  My '04 Sierra 3500 doesn't have them.  The GMT400's might have had them, but this decision isn't on the current ceo.

Few will get that reference, but your intent was there.

So well played sir, at least for the effort.
