Towing small 5th wheel with new AT4

Recommended Posts

Check the payload rating on trucks (in the glovebox) on dealers' lots for the 1500 trucks. It will be 450 lbs less for a crew cab as manufacturers subtract 150 lbs for each passenger seat. Usually the tires are the limitation on payload and not the axle.

But the Chevy 1500 trucks have two serious defects with respect to towing a heavy trailer. They come with small gas tanks and no option for a larger one as with Ford and Ram (Toyotas come stock with a large gas tank) and aftermarket gas tanks will only be ones that go into the bed of the truck. Second problem is that you can only get them with 3.42 gears. With Ram I can get a 3.92, with Toyota 4.10, and Ford has options for 3.73 or 4.10 gear ratio with the F-150.

Chevy is clearly not interested in the Silverado 1500 for towing and expects customers to get the 2500 instead. I think that they are driving a lot of their customers to Ram.

Payload capacity sticker is on the driver's door jamb, not the glove box.  Payload capacity includes the driver and all passengers.  Max tow rating takes into account two 150 lb people (driver and one passenger) and 70 lbs for a tow hitch.  Two 150 lb people have nothing to do with payload capacity.

I’ve pretty well axed the idea of any half ton. Now it’s between 2500 at4 gas and f250 7.3 tremor

Does that solve the original issue of wanting a better ride as a work truck vs your 3500?

No not entirely. But I sounds like the half ton idea was a pipe dream. Probably should have held onto the 3500. But the maintenance costs of the gas will be considerably lower than the diesel which is covered by me.

I'm not a big fan of Ford, but that 7.3 Godzilla engine paired with a 10 speed sounds a lot better than the 6.6 gasser with a 6 speed.
