Towing question?

Recommended Posts

Hi all , I have a new 2500 Duramax 6.6l standard bed 4x4 and am looking at getting 5th wheel.  Trailer dealers tell you one thing and truck dealer numbers tell me something else.  I know trailer dealers will tell you what ever you need to hear to buy the thing.  I am wanting to tow a grand design solitude 5th wheel that has a GVWR of 16000lbs.  Can I tow this safely?

If I am looking at it right Maximum trailer wt for 2020 2500 with standard box with 6.6 diesel gooseneck/fifth wheel is 18,500 lb.  the payload and pin wt would be another place to check. I have seen some of the new ones with a payload of +3,000 lbs. my 2016 was only 2,100 lbs.

If the 5th wheel has 6,000lb axles that would mean your max pin weight would be 4,000lbs (16,000-12,000=4,000lbs) Then you will need to add your hitch, passenger weight and all other related weight.

OP has a 2019, according to his avatar.

(I think you're reading it right.  Looks like 2020 2500 dmax std bed crews (with 18" or 20" wheels) have 18,500 5th wheel and gooseneck ratings.  Payload with 3563)

You are correct, sorry for the confusion. Making a wrong assumption without looking at his avatar.

Take your truck empty, fill it up with all fluids including DEF.  Go weigh it, once you have that number you can subtract it minus the 10,000 GVWR of your truck and youll have an idea of how heavy a pin weight you can carry.  2019 2500 Duramax is limited to 14,200lbs fifth wheel... 17,200lbs on the SRW 3500.  Can the truck handle a heavier load, sure it can... but it wont be legal.

Having done mountains of research as we are looking at getting a 5th wheel.  Due to not knowing true payload capacities initially and what we are looking at I went with a 3500 SRW.

From what I've seen we could probably make do with a 2500 but I'm okay with being overly capable/rated of towing what we are getting.  Plus without having the truck, luggage, people, etc...who knows what the available payload really would be.

The answer to that question is by the B Pillar on a sticker by the driver's door.  Is the Gooseneck rating ?

They didn't start applying that level of detail on the door stickers til 2020 model.

OP has a '19.

Not even in the Owners Manual?  I find that odd the Towing and Carring weight plackard was not posted by the door.

Starting with 2020 the specific tow numbers for the vehicle are on the door.

Earlier, the tow numbers are in the manual, but the door still had GVWR and axle weight ratings as well as payload and tire pressure info.

The label with tow information on the 2020's should have been implemented years ago.

Would have prevented many many long threads.....
