Silverado SS muffler and tailpipe installed!

Recommended Posts

I had the muffler and tailpipe installed this morning, it's quieter than I thought it would be considering GM says "it's tuned for a throaty exhaust sound" but I still like it. I was running a stock muffler and 3" tailpipe from a Tahoe and the SS set up is about 2 db's louder which is really all I was looking for. The SS muffler has dual 2.75" inlets and a single 3.5" tailpipe with a stainless tip. The muffler guys did a good job installing it! They replaced the stock 2.75" front pipe with a new 3" pipe and installed a Magnaflow "Y" onto the dual inlet pipes of the SS muffler. They cut off most of the dual inlet pipes leaving about them about one foot long and connected the "Y", then the single 3" pipe flanged up to my factory "Y" pipe. Looks like a factory install and it does feel like I picked up a few ponies, took less pedal to get around on the freeway driving home. Overall I'm happy, a little more exhaust note with no resonation and a slight performance gain.

how much did you pay for the new exhaust? if you dont mind I'm interested in doing this.

Well let's see? The SS exhaust was only $25 from a guy on the SS forum but I had to pay for shipping from New Jersey to California, so it was $90 total. Then another $100 to have it installed, that was for the labor, Magnaflow Y pipe and some 2.5" & 3" pipe. So it was about $190 total I guess.

How much of a difference is there ACTUALLY between the SS exhaust and the stock?

I paid $260 for my Flowmaster 40 and dual tails...

Heck, I don't know. I know that a stock exhaust on a 5.3L is whisper quiet and this isn't. It's not very loud by any means though. When I start my truck, I can hear, it has a nice mellow "BAH, BAH, BAH, BAH.. It's really nothing more than an exhaust for an HD truck with a 6.0L or 8.1L but has more sound to it. If it has enough flow for the 6.0L in the SS, it should be enough for my 5.3L..
