They push them because they are big margin money makers

Of course they are... But 1 issue with some computer in year 4 and its paid for itself...  :)

I do like the one suggestion above about just putting that money aside "just in case" - not a bad idea...

I agree. They told me that my extended warranty will cover anything not covered by the dealer with the exception of normal wear items.

But, it's just like you say, 1 issue with a computer and its paid for itself.

I dunno, I'm a big believer in insurance.

Especially life insurance. After 2 years life insurance lays off no matter what, even including suicide and the money is totally tax free. In NC anyways.

My experience is they are worthless unless you buy a piece of junk, like a Ram.  I've turned down almost $30k in extended warranties over the years.  My 82 S-10 needed a new crankshaft pulley, my 89 S-15 needed a new coil and temp sensor, my 01 Sierra 1500 needed a new starter and fuel pump when it was about 13 years old and my 16 Silverado 1500 has never needed any warranty work and has had no problems at 49k miles.  The Sierra would have been out of warranty and the other issues cost me about $300, if that much.  So maybe $1k in total out of pocket expenses for unanticipated repairs on all my GM products in the past 40 years.  Paying $30k to cover $300 in repairs doesn't sound like a very good deal to me.
