85 Chevy overcharging

My 85 chevy has a serious overcharging problem when i am on the highway the gauge reads almost into the red, and the battery is bulged out and leaking juice. What is the first thing I should look for when solving this problem? I have a common style load tester (chrome body with gauge and load switch on the bottom) and I know how to use it to test the battery but am unsure how to check the charging system with it.

Don't run the truck untill you get the regulator replaced. The battery WILL EXPLODE! The regulator is built into the alternator so it's a quick fix. Rplace the alternator. The battery explosion will cause serious injury and at least bathe your engine in acid.
