2013 Yukon parking brake won't release

The foot actuated parking brake on my 2013 Yukon will not release no matter how far down I push it. The problem started recently and is getting worse. The rear shoes are thick. The cables are free and not rusted. I adjusted the parking brake cable. Still a problem. I strongly suspect the parking brake assembly up under the dash. My preference would be to repair it followed by installing a new assembly. I would appreciate any help suspicion  and  with  fixing the problem. Thanks!
