New engine <30k miles

Recommended Posts

Can anyone give me insight as to what's causing my engine to be replaced at such low mileage? Went to get warranty work done because truck would have a slight knocking sound close to rear of front tire (bellhousing area). A week before truck gets dropped off, CEL comes on. It threw a P0308 code. Two weeks later, truck is still being diagnosed. Then, they report back saying cylinder 8 test was all good, but it is still misfiring. Noise persists and they reccomend engine tear down. They find that lifters need to be replaced along with camshaft due to pitting. Then send in parts sheet which include all new lifters, seals, camshaft, actuator and gaskets. Most of which are backordered.  1 month goes by and engine now needs to be replaced, a lot of carbon deposit and buildup is found and #8 cylinder wall is scored up. Deposit was so bad they say there was also rust.

My question is how did this happen? This truck is babied, never has seen WOT or even 80+ mph. Maintenance has been on time. Amsoil signature every 4-5k miles, premium gas (one brand all its life), synthetic air filter, a can of BG44K every oil change. I'm just confused? Is it bad gas? Is it improper maintenance? Someone help me out.

Good old fashioned AFM lifter failure. Not your fault, it's the design.

There are ways to extend future life of your engine after rebuild.

1. Catch can
2. Tune to remove V4
3. Forget 1 and 2 if you do a hardware delete of the AFM lifters and have them use a Texas Speed kit. You will need to tune out V4 or run a Range Module full time.

Contemplated catch can since the beginning, not sure why I haven't done it. But truck is tuned and runs in V8 at all times. For sure this next time around catch can is going in.

Can this be done on the 2019 custom TB? if so any reliable shops in the Midwest folks would recommend?

Spalling.

That is what you are looking at.  It has one or both of the following two causes.

1.) Poor heat treat.

2.) Lubrication break down.

GM is on the hook for the first. It's a QC issue not a design issue. The second can be a shared responsibility that goes to heat management and less frequently dilution.

Interesting that it was a non AFM cylinder that failed.  Lifter might have spun in the bore/guide and bent a rod.

Also, WOT is your friend.  Babied ones seem to be the ones that get ripped into on these forums.

In other words... frequent oil changes are your friend.  Especially with DI engines.

Isn't it.

Hum, lubrication issue or poor heat treat and advice to run it WOT.

That is.....wellll….counter intuitive. (Kindest thing I could think of)

I am very curious.  Are the repairs being done under warranty?

Yes, under warranty. No hassles. Only issue, it's been 2 months so far.

I’d like to see the rest of the valves as that one looks horrible for only 30k miles.

They all look like that, really weird. The tech said the engine is way too young to look like that. Was thinking of a catch can when it was new, now I kinda regret I didnt. I wanna see everyone else's engine looks like

How often is everyone changing oil? Are y'all running full syn? And are you guys putting additives. I was using M1 and I always thought 0W-20 was kinda thin. Amsoil 0w-20 isnt as thin. And I noticed a difference immediately. Everything felt smoother. And is WOT an everyday thing? I treat my 02 single cab way worse and drive it aggressively almost daily and she has never let me down. Those engines are indestructible. 140k miles and shes still going strong.

I’ve been changing mine between 5-7,000 miles. Running the same Mobil 1 0-20 as you with Mobil 1 filter. First 2 oil changes were done by dealer. I’ve got right 29,000 miles on mine. Yours kind of scares me. Sharp looking truck u got though. Are you running any other mods?
