Check List - Before you hand dealer the check

Recommended Posts

Afternoon.  So I am picking up a new 2019 LT Trail Boss when it arrives this week at the dealer. I have the build spec sheet, but anything you guys would check for?  I compiled a list and here is what I plan on checking before handing over the check:

* Check Bed alignment
* 18" 275/65R18C Mud Terrain Goodyear® Wrangler DuraTrac®blackwall tires
* 4" BLACK ROUND ASSIST STEPS
* Spare tire
* Scratches | dents
* Floor mats?
* Chevy tech spray-on bed liner
* Rear wheelhouse liners

I am not sure what size spare they include and could not find on my spec sheet.  Also, not sure if it comes with floor mats, as I don't recall them on chevrolet.com's site, unless you added.  Please let me know if I should be on the lookout for anything else.  I am sure some of you have been through this before, so any insight would be appreciated.

Rear wheel liners. makes the truck look so much better.

I believe all trucks come with floor mats but the mud floor mats are way better than stock. i bought them immediately.

Check for rust on the frame, i do not believe its a known issue on the 2019 model, I don't have any but just in case.

You should get the GM all-weather floor mats with the Z71 package on the TB. They are EXCELLENT floor mats, front and back.

Definitely double check the wheel liners. I ordered them on mine and they were not installed when I arrived. Glad I checked. They are one of the "must have" accessories, IMO.

Check to make sure they replace the carpeted storage box under the rear seats, too. My dealer did not re-install mine when they installed the Z71 floor mats, so I had to go back and get it later.

Make sure the tailgate drops with the remote control. Some guys have reported theirs being sticky and not dropping.

Definitely check over the tires. Some people have reported some wear / scuffs on them that are not normal. (mostly the Trailrunners)

Make sure to get both of your key fobs, too.

Enjoy the new truck!

In addition to making sure you're getting what you should with your trim level/packages/upgrades.....

Maybe I am being overly picky, but I don't like parting with my money and not being 100% pleased with a vehicle for which I've decided to purchase, particularly a new one.  I'm not saying I have buyer's remorse, but my truck is going on its 2nd week at the dealer & one thing I'd do over is I'd ask to take one last test drive, covering stop & go & highway speeds & let DFM kick in and drive on some bumpy roads, if at all possible, & listen for anything that sounds out of the ordinary (turn off music and turn air down).

Some random things I have read as not all have been happy about after the fact on this forum for mostly 5.3L 8 speeds and 6.2L 10 speeds are as follows:

  • make sure you're OK living with Auto Start/Stop and anything else you have to turn on or off every time you start your vehicle.
  • dash rattles (loose cables, etc.)
  • rear seat headrest rattles (over bumps or bumpy roads)
  • external rattles or pops while turning sharply or changing direction (rattles in headliner, general popping sounds from underneath or overhead - have heard all of these as well as some strange sounds that resemble drops of water hitting the roof when driving the 2019 GMC 1500 SLE 4X4 loaner - could be lack of wheel well liners, not sure at all about these)
  • high pitched squeaking or chirping (sounds almost like a squeaky belt when under 1800 RPM & highway speeds with engine under light load - 6.2L w/10 speed trans but doesn't hurt to listen in other powertrain combos to be sure)
  • look the paint over for manual touch ups and hand correction (mainly with dark paints)
  • check your tailgate up/down operation
  • check all powered creature comforts (seats, mirrors (folding, adjusting, if part of your packages), windows, etc) and make sure they work consistently.
  • blast the a/c and listen for fan noises or check if it's not cooling down
  • anything mechanical - like 4X4, transmission shifts, etc.
  • make sure all the cool Infotainment things are working properly and that you integrate your phone via all ports a few times (see how it operates after start/stop of engine as well as plug/unplug)

Non-vehicle related (and something common sense but almost got me):

  • If you're trading in and the salesman filled out a worksheet showing selling price, trade value, trade difference, all rebates/discounts, taxes - make SURE those are the same on the paperwork the finance guys fill out.  They had my trade value wrong by $2500 on the contract.  Granted, they fixed it and all was well, but that could have turned into a real screw job had the salesman not been honest and "lost" the worksheet.

Those are just some quick thoughts I have - mostly that the vehicle works as it should when you take delivery.  After that, just think of how you may feel should you hear "that's normal" or "we can't replicate it" should you come back to the dealer asking questions or lodging complaints.

Good luck and enjoy your new truck!

I always check that the jack parts are in the vehicle. Twice I have found that it was missing as the detail guy had missed it. I would also do a test drive before accepting the vehicle.

Listen for any noises when accelerating or backing up and how it feels on the road as with does it drift in one direction either when driving or when making a turn or hard braking. The transmission should shift smoothly when accelerating and don't let the people at the dealer tell you that the transmission is "learning" and it is not a problem. If there is a problem of any kind I would not accept the truck (take delivery) and have the issues written up and signed by the sale manager.

After you take delivery of the vehicle and drive away your leverage to get problems fixed has disappeared and it becomes a warranty issue which is much less of a priority for the dealer.

I would also check the fluid levels for the coolant, motor oil, brake fluid, and the ATF. Often have found new vehicles that were down a couple pints with the ATF or a quart down on the motor oil. The detail person is supposed to check all this but they often fail to do so.

Paint flaws are definitely the main thing to look out for IMO. Definitely spend a lot of time going over the body up and down in various lighting.

The spare is a 17” steel wheel with some cheap ass Maxxis temporary spare tire. The size of the tire depends on what wheels you have. With 18” wheels, it’ll probably be a 265/70.

I found the following on the dealers website for my VIN:

"LPO, All-weather floor liners, 1st and 2nd rows (includes Z71 logo)"

I am not sure if these are the ones you mentioned, but it says the above are included.

YES, make sure the tailgate drops. Even if they tell you that it will work in, it will not i am still dealing with the issue, i have not taken it in yet. I am waiting for something else before i do.

Also, send am email with you VIN t[email protected] and they will give the build sheet with dates and all RPO for your vehicle (if you dont have it already.

Yes, those are the ones I was referencing. They are dealer-installed after the truck arrives. Just confirm that.

Thanks for all the recommendations.  I have added all of them to the list.  Boy, my check-out is going to take a few hours!

Better a few extra hours before you drive off than going back a few times over the coming month in hopes to get whatever you missed corrected, though!

I'd be more concerned with small items that can be removed, like the extra key fob, owners manual (do they still give you a paper owners manual?) I asked for and received a free bottle of touch-up paint with mine. I have had to use it twice.

Any real issue you discover later will be taken care of under warranty by a decent dealer, but you should definitely make sure everything works that is important to you. I'd really only worry about the physical and mechanical parts since anything technology related will likely be solved with software updates, etc. Expect to get a few of those letters from GM in the mail over the next year.

Scratches/Dents - add flakes, chips, swirls, excess paint (drips/runs), etc.  Definitely, paint flaws are HUGE.
