Front ABS speed sensor replacement

Recommended Posts

OK, so I am a complete idiot! Installed a level kit today and in the process my front passenger side abs speed sensor cable severed. Anybody have to replace one? Any step by step tutorial or videos floating around?

It's a $20 part, looks like it may be accessible without taking the brake system apart. Trying to decide if i want to tackle this myself or or pay through the nose at a shop.

Thanks

*edit to add 2016 Sierra 4wd

Just need to figure out how, lol. Looks like I can access the allen screw with a looong allen wrench. If it is that easy, I will no doubt do it. However, I have zero interest if I have to take hub off etc, etc.

Replaced my front struts a couple months back and somehow screwed up my front passenger side ABS sensor. It’s easy to replace. For me it was a bit of a pain because I had to pull off my 35” tire and put it back on by myself. That sucked

as I said it’s simple

remove wheel

remove brake caliper and disc

remove sensor and install new one

install everything in reverse order.

I dont think you can get it out without removing the disc at least I couldn’t on mine and I have a 17 model

After doing it myself though no way would I pay someone to do it. It’s really pretty simple. From jack up to jack down it probably took me less than an hour.

Thank you! Was hoping to be able to avoid messing with brakes/rotors. Something about messing with brakes makes me uneasy.
Can the calipers and mounting bracket come off in 1 piece or do they need to come off separately?

It’s 2 bolts and slide off the whole assembly and put it to the side.  Then there is one countersink screw holding the disc on and that’s it.

Thanks again. Sitting at dealer getting the post level alignment done, they are around $280 to replace. Already ordered the part and will give it a go myself.

where you severed it, do you have a bit of wire left on both sides to splice it together? My moms car had the ABS line in a position such that when you turn the wheel the wire would bend a lot and it eventually broke the connection inside the wire. I had just opened up the wire loom it was inside of and spliced in a 2" extension for the wires and routed them up in a better way than the factory and used solder and heat shrink tubing with the adhesive inside of it so it's 100% sealed up. It has been working fine for her for almost a year now. Give that a shot if you want instead of taking the sensor out and replacing it.

$280!!!!!  Screw that. It’s to easy to do yourself to be dropping that kinda coin at the dealer.

I hate turning wrenches but I hate going to the dealer even more.

First thing I tried. Cut did not leave enough room to patch.
New sensor should be delivered tomorrow and will replace this weekend.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in. I had just enough room to slip in a 5mm hex/allen without removing calipers and rotor! I found it easier to use an appropriately sized flathead screwdriver to screw the bolt back in. I then tightened it down with the hex. Hardest part of actual replacement was unhooking the damaged one. Those electrical connectors always give me fits. Actual hardest part of job was dragging out the jack and lifting truck and setting up jack stand.
